Now that Blu-ray players are becoming more common in the living room, so are the Blu-ray DVD movies we watch on them. To rip a Blu-ray disc on Mac, you need an External Blu-ray Writer to enable your Mac read Blu-ray disc, and then downloaded the free MakeMKV beta to extract video and audio files from Blu-ray DVD to your hard drive, preserving the full quality of your Blu-ray DVD movies.
Rip Blu-ray DVD movies to MKV on the Mac
Connect external Blu-ray writer to your Mac and launch MakeMKV, and the software immediately found my USB-connected drive, and let me read the Blu-ray disc inside.
It then will present you with a list of titles, each with a file size next to it. The first title was the main movie—easy to tell because it listed the number of chapters and also displayed the largest file size of the group.
Clicking the disclosure triangle next to that title shows the various audio and subtitle tracks contained in the movie, and let you deselect those you don’t want. Then click the Make MKV button and a MKV file will be on your hard drive when the conversion is done.

MakeMKV basically strips the copy protection from movies and then copies them into an MKV container. The result is a perfect copy of the movie, at its original frame size and data rate, which I was able to play on my Mac Pro using the free VLC media player.
