Take off the transmission and go into it, there is a retaining clip there on the inside that keeps the axle in , sorry, keep all oil and filter it and reuse it, and refill the tank thing too, its hydrostatic oil.
its not that hard, just go slow and look up some diagrams and use Hondabond if you can for the sealent, let dry overnight before refill

Cannot get rear axle out on a 2010 flhtc

Hi Anonymous, push the axel all the way back in. Safely and securely blockthe front of bike with wood so that front wheel is 3" to 6" off the ground, then jack the rear end of frame so you can see axel has negative pressure in swingarm slots and you pull axel out with your fingers. Or if you have a cycle jack even better. A long phillips screw driver/drift and a plastic mallet should do the rest. Please visit website below for a better how to:

Mtd removing rear wheels from axel

Be very carefull, if you pull the wheels hard enough the half shaft will pop the circlip on the inside of the gearbox and come away with the wheel, this will then require a gearbox strip down, leave it soaking in penetrating oil and try again.

To replace the Rear pads you do not need to remove the axle. To remove the rear wheel you need it all the way out.

Rear wheel bearing

if its like the 99 winstar:

safely support the van, remove rear wheel, remove brake drum, remove grease cap. remove caged locknut assembly (38mm socket i think.) then pull the hub assembly from the axel. you may need to cut away the inner race if the bearing falls apart. clean axel, apply alittle anti size compound, then push on the new hub assembly. tighten down the hub nut to specifications (should be on the leaflet in the new bearing package), install dust cap, install drum, install wheel, lower and drive :)

Leaking left rear wheel seal.

Loosen differential cover and let oil drain. Remove cover, remove E clip lock from axel. Pull axel out. Remove bearing seal. Install new seal and reinstall axel. Reinstall E clip lock and new cover gasket. Fill with 75-90wt gear oil. Now I know that sound pretty straight forward. But there are some things to remember. The E clip lock can be difficult to remove sometimes. The most important thing is the seal, you will need to make sure it gets seated correctly and not torn when installing axel
