How can I open .dbx files ?

I recently reformatted my computer, and saved my Outlook Express Inbox, Sent, and addresses . The only way I could find to save them was in .dbx files, which I cannot seem to find a way to open!! In looking on line, I find programs ...to buy...that will open them, but surely there must be a better cheaper, more accessable way ? I keep thinking that if that is the common way to save these, I must be missing the common way to open them. Please tell me how to proceed

To backup the data files, in OE go to Tools > Options > Maintenance > Data Folder. Copy down the location of folder. Navigate to folder and backup

Also do a search for and back up <user>.wab file. This is your contacts files. You need to unhide hidden files to see this file and above folder. In Windows XP, open Windows Explorer or any folder. Click on Tools > Folders Options > View. Check "Show hidden files and folders". If you want to see system files as well, unclick Hide protected operating system files. Click OK.
OR
DBX Viewer Tool found on reader .dbx files, and it can help almost managed to scratch out all the messages from the file! Then save them as separate files, and then put back into OE. While working. Now we have to find the address book, it is also somewhere to go away until I found :

Outlook Express data missing.

Offer several options.
1 As the .dbx file for the account has been lost, then you need a data recovery software to recover back that .dbx file. As the email recovery software comes into action when you have an .dbx file where the email recovery software can scan that file and then extract emails from that.
Your case is different, you have lost your .dbx file which means you cannot retrieve your emails.
To recover the .DBX file, through OE-Mail Recovery http://www.oemailrecovery.com/outlook-express-recovery.html
This data recovery software recoveres every file which was recently deleted or was deleted long time back. It can also recover files if your partition has been formatted, deleted or recreated.

Give it a try as it had helped me when the same case happened with me when i had lost my .dbx files.
2 You may need to unhide hidden files to see them. Open Windows Explorer folder and select Tools > Folders Options > View. Check "Show hidden files and folders". Click OK.

Try also to restore the file using this online service. I found it in Google. https://onlinefilerepair.com/en/outlookexpress-repair-online.html

This lead to the many programs, such as, Recovery Toolbox for Outlook Express, http://www.outlookexpress.recoverytoolbox.com/ but it is possible and Total Commander plugins.
