I have a Sears Kenmore elite model# 11072942100 that will not always stay running when pushing the start button, however if I hold down the start button and then turn the dial it will eventually stay

Rick,
Good call on the timer switch. If the teeth have worn at the start position, starting would be delayed until the timer is rotated beyond the worn area. The normal operation of the start button is that it should to be pushed in and held for a second, to prevent inadvertent starts. The problem could be related to the door latch. The door safety switch will make intermittent contact if the door is not completely latched. If the door has become misaligned from downward pressure, it may not be drawing the door in enough to push in the switch. First check the alignment of the door. If the door is low, try bending the hinges back up. Open the door just enough to get your fingers inside the bottom of the door and slowly pull up. If the door is better aligned it may push the switch in better. Close the door and try the dryer.Next try holding the door in with one hand and pressing the start button. If the dryer starts every time while pushing the door in, then the latch is worn and should be replaced. I hope this solves the problem.
Good luck

hi there,

you have a door latch problem. the reason you can still push on the button is because this particular washer has a time delay function. i would recommend taking a look at the latch itself and possibly the wax motor that runs the latch.

Dryer problem

with power disconnected
follow the wires from the start button, to a relay,
check the wires (both ends) of all leads to the relay and reconnect any that have fallen off. (crimp tighter if they have fallen)
Check door switch function and connection.
check timer connections
the relay start-button timer and door switch comprise a latching circuit, when the start button is pressed the relay is supposed to latch closed and supply current to heater and motor. if the latching circuit disconnects the relay does not latch closed, and only runs as long as the start button is pressed.
if nothing has disconnected one side of the relay has usually failed, and the connection is not being made to latch the circuit
replace relay

Press start button but wont stay on

the switch is fine
the switch in all dryers triggers a relay, that then latches and supplies current to motor and heater, until deactivated by door switch or timer switch
inside the control panel,
trace the wires from the start switch to the first device
c27eaf9.jpgmay be opaque.
ensure that the wires are all connected.
if all are connected replace relay
the local part store will have the relay it is common to most dryers
Cant give exact instructions, no experience with particular model

Cycle buttons work, option buttons dont, Cant deselect heated dry, Wont start

The part is covered by warranty. However, the labor is not and Whirlpool will not replace the part without having someone service the unit. Every place I checked wanted $100 just to come out and tell me what was wrong. Any service would be extra. Seems like Whirlpool figured out how not to stand behind its products. They should be held accountable.
