To pull the thread through the material the thread tension for the top and bottom is too tight.

If you're working with a lightweight fabric, this is normal. So long as it's even, keep working.

The tension on the top is out of sync. Don't know what to adjust. Help

Since we don't have a clear picture of what is happening, we can't offer much in the way of advice. Here is something to try:

Remove the top thread from the machine.
Be sure to install a brand new needle.
ALWAYS RAISE the presser foot and rethread the top thread from the beginning. Verify the thread path is correct.
Remove the bobbin and rethread it into the bobbin case and install it in the machine. Make sure the bobbin is turning the correct direction in the bobbin case.
Set the top tension to the midway point (the factory standard tension).
Retest the machine.
HINT: Thread issues appearing under the fabric are usually a top thread problem. Thread issues appearing on top of the fabric are usually bobbin related.
If top thread is showing under the fabric, tighten the top tension.
If bobbin thread is showing on top of the fabric, loosen the top tension.
If problems continue, the bobbin tension may also need to be adjusted. HOWEVER, that is a last resort and a very tricky change to make. Be sure to mark where the tension screw is set BEFORE making any changes to the bobbin tension screw (so you can reverse your changes if it doesn't work).

You can also try changing the type & size of needle and the brand/weight of thread. AVOID old or bargain bin threads. Your needle choice, thread, and fabric should be compatible. Using the wrong needle can cause huge problems with stitching success.

Understanding Thread Tension Threads

My Singer 8500Q continuously stops and shows that the top thread is broken and won't sew. It's not broken, I rethread & it happens again. I just got this machine and think I've wasted my money.

Sounds like part of the problem is the top thread is not seated completely.

Remove the top thread from the machine (NEVER pull the thread up...clip the thread next to the spool, raise the presser foot, and pull the thread down through the needle).

ALWAYS RAISE the presser foot and rethread the top thread.
Verify that the thread path is correct.

Now retest your machine and tweak the tension, if needed.

How do I fix the bottom bobbin thread

THE BOTTOM AND TOP THREADS ARE IN A TUG OF WAR. WHEN THE TOP IS TOO LOOSE THE BOBBIN WILL BE PULLING HARDER THAN THE TOP THREAD SO A GREAT DEAL MORE THREAD WILL END UP ON THE BOTTOM. TO CORRECT THIS YOU INCREASE THE TOP THREAD TENSION. IF THE TOP THREAD IS PULLING HARDER THAN THE BOTTOM THEN A GREAT DEAL MORE BOBBIN THREAD WILL END UP ON THE TOP. TO CORRECT THIS YOU WOULD LOWER THE TENSION ON TOP.

Most likely caused by issues with your top tension if it is showing on the underside of the fabric, top thread is not being tensioned fully or at all. Check the tension dial is set to five and that the top thread is between the tension discs and under tension.

Best way is to lower the pressure foot as this engages the top tension. Then pull the thread from below the tension device, down near the needle bar, it should feel firm to you.

If not, then check top threading again, rethread and pull thread into the tension device, and test again. If there is some tension there, then you could try turning the top tension dial up to a higher number a little to see if this helps with the stitching.

Failing that, take it for a service, tension device is probably faulty.

"Birdnesting" occurs when there is no tension on the needle thread to pull the bobbin thread. This is easily corrected by rethreading the machine, following the threading path carefully and making sure the thread is fully engaged in the tension mechanism.

it sounds like no bobbin thread tension. there should be some resistance when you pull on the bobbin thread. if there is none or too little you may have some lint or thread caught behind the bobbin case tension spring.

very carefully try and push the tip of a thin pin into the bobbin case tension spring and pick any accumulated thread or lint out.

if the bobbin case spring is clean, try tightening the bobbin tension a little at a time until your zig zag looks ok.

of-course all this is done after checking needle threading and needle for damage.
