Question about Compaq Computers & Internet

1 Answer

Compaq cq61 laptop

I know this is not a new machine but it was running great. I closed the screen, went to bed, to work, came home open the screen swipe the mouse pad and nothing. This is where the screen would come on for my PW. The fan will come on, the Caps and Number lock lights flash at the same time and flash again in about five seconds. The disc indicator on the front left of the machine will not light, the charging light comes on. I plugged it into my bravia as an external monitor and it would not recognize an input. Black screen. It does not have an ozone smell or smell as if anything has over heated. I am leaning towards the motherboard if there is a problem. It worked fine the day before and was untouched when this occurred, the only out of the ordinary activity was I used a Ethernet cable man, and not my wireless. But it was still my internet router. Thanks for any help.

If you remove the power adapter and battery, press the power button to discharge any latent power. Plug the power adapter back in press power. If it still shows flashing Caps lock light, it has overheated and requires a GPU rework/repair.

Testimonial: "I did what you told me to do and Cap and Number lock lights still flash. Does this mean that the mother board needs to be replaced? I would prefer to fix this machine but I also realize it is dated. I found a MB for $60.00 but what will happen next? It always seemed like the fan was trying to pull as much air as it could get, I have been fanatical about cleaning all of our electronics ( my OCD ) won't allow me to not clean them. I really hope the Hard Drive is alright, I have pictures on there and I hope I can get them. Thank You for your help."

Fit my Compaq Presario CQ61?

accu Compaq Presario CQ61 100 percent compatible with you Compaq Presario CQ61. I bought two Compaq Presario CQ61 batteries from http://www.accukorting.com/compaq-presario-cq61.html two weeks ago, I felt very surprised, because it fits nearly as good as the original battery.

I've had my compaq presario cq61 for about 2-3 years. A while back it would occasionally have a kind of shaky/blinky screen but just in the past week it's like the screen has stopped working.

The problem may be due the graphics card or data cable or backlighting.

The data cable can be severed over time though opening and closing the display. This can be replaced.
The backlighting/inverter dies, some-times the windows desktop screen can be seen if one looks carefully. This can also be replaced.

Try connect your notebook to another computer's monitor via VGA or HDMI out.

If this works then the problem lies with your LCD screen.

Take care!

Compaq presario cq61 display not show

I had the same problem. While rebooting the laptop the screen would be on for a few seconds after it finished rebooting then the display would go black. If you looked very carefully at the screen you could see the image was there but there was no light behind the screen to make the image visible.

I removed the black plastic display bezel cover that goes around the edge of the display screen to check out the lights and wiring. I found a small magnet that belongs inside the display bezel had fallen out of it's slot in the plastic bezel and was stuck to the inverter pcb (printed cicuit board). To fix this problem I secured the magnet into it's slot inside the display bezel with a bit of glue. After fixing the problem and putting the display bezel back together the laptop worked normally.

This magnet is how the laptop knows the lid is closed. When the laptop is closed the magnet is moved closer to a magnetic switch on the inverter pcb and activates the switch. The laptop thinks it is closed and shuts off the lights behind the display screen. When the magnet fell out of it's slot and stuck to the inverter it activated the magnetic switch all the time whether the laptop was open or closed. This caused the laptop to think it was closed and shut off the lights behind the dispaly screen as soon as the reboot finished.

My Compaq Presario CQ61 has no screen when I turn it on, I have replaced and charged the battery, but still have no screen

I had this problem, the screen would turn on for a few seconds then shut off. I found the magnet inside the display bezel had fallen out of it's slot and was stuck to the inverter. This magnet is how the laptop knows the lid is closed. Of course, when the laptop is closed it shuts off the screen. I secured the magnet into it's slot inside the bezel around the screen with a bit of glue. The magnet attracts some kind of switch on the inverter board when the laptop is closed and when it fell out of it's slot and stuck to the inverter it made the switch all the time whether the laptop was open or closed. The laptop works normally now. 74aa5d08-ab1b-415f-b65b-e5730298479e.jpg d9a5bae7-b43c-4797-8790-a1d667831be9.jpg 0bff3520-95d0-4d35-9d8a-c5e3e0d627fd.jpg

While using my compaq cq61-412nr notebook my scree will suddenly go blank when i open and close the lid a coulple times it returns then blackouts again

It sounds like you have a bad LCD DC inverter board. This device low voltage DC current into high voltage AC current, which is required to power your LCD screen's back light. Here is a simple test to determine whether your DC inverter board is bad:
1. Power on your computer 2. If the screen initially turns on, either wait for it to go black, or perform any action that you know consistently makes it go black. 3. Find a standard flashlight and shine it directly at the screen. If you can see your display with the light shining on it, then your inverter board needs replacing. You may need to maneuver the flashlight to a particular angle to see the display through the glare of the flashlight on the screen.
Replacing the DC inverter board is inexpensive, if you are moderately experienced with the mechanical aspects of laptop computers. The replacement part will run you between $20 and $40 (here is one that fits your computer for approximately $20: http://www.zlectronic.com/product/For-Compaq-presario--cq61-412nr-Laptop-Lcd-Inverter-Display-Replacement.html). You should not attempt to replace the component yourself unless you feel confident about what you are doing. If you feel better having an expert perform the job, consult different computer repair shops in your area for a price quote on the labor. Be sure to let them know you will be supplying the part yourself; if you have them obtain it, you will almost assuredly be charged a mark-up.

Compaq presario cq61 screen went dark but can still see window faintly through the dark sreen.

Look at the LCD screen very closely and check if you can see a faint image on the screen. It's possible that the LCD lid close switch stuck in the "closed" position and the back-light stays off even when you open the LCD screen or turn on the laptop. The switch turns off the back-light when you close the LCD display to save the laptop battery power.

If no luck, try to remove battery and drain the power, then replace battery and turn on.

If that didn't fix it then there are 3 things that could have gone wrong:

1. Video cable connection from inverter to LCD got loose. To check this, follow instructions from step 3 on how to open the LCD and check if cable is fitted properly.

2. The video inverter is faulty
The screen inverter failure is very similar to the back-light lamp failure. In both cases the screen gets very dark and the image on the screen becomes very faint, barely visible under a bright light. If it's still under warranty, take it for a replacement. You can replace this otherwise - you can find the inverter under the screen, follow the procedure described at point 3 to open up the screen.

3. The LCD monitor is faulty
If it works on an external monitor most likely the LCD is faulty and needs replacement. If it's still under warranty, take it for a replacement. If not, you can do it yourself, it's pretty easy. Remove the rubber covers on the side of the screen, unscrew the screws take the plastic cover off, disconnect the video inverter and put in the new LCD after you connect the video inverter to it.

My computer fell out of the car on its bottom closed. got it home plugged it in it started up great when it got to running the screen went dark. not sure what could be wrong

Seems that the LCD screen cable went loose at either its connection with the inverter board or the LCD screen itself. You need to disassemble the LCD screen panel & check the cable connections at both ends. I would also recommend to disassemble the whole laptop & check all connections. The fall might have caused any of the connections to become loose.
