Why isn't Microsoft Word working?

I opened my Microsoft word and a box popped up help protect & improve Microsoft office. I clicked use recommended settings & pressed ok but nothing happened now it just beeps at me

Try wiping out the program and fresh install it.
It's better to do that than searching for problems that never shows up to common eyes...

Hold down your ALT key, and touch the TAB key.
You'll see a list of "open" windows.
Touch the TAB key again, and the "outline" rectangle around one item in the list will move to the next item.
Release the ALT key to "focus" on the window.
If it is a "dialog" window (with 'yes' or 'no' or 'cancel' buttons),
close the window.

Repeat the hold-down-the-ALT-and-touch-TAB until you have closed the "dialog" window that is "blocking" Word.

1. Click the File tab, then Click Info. On the menu to the right Click Protect Document and
Click Encrypt with Password.

2. The Encrypt Document dialog will appear, Type in a password and then Click OK to finish.

Please note – It’s very important to use a STRONG Password or Pass Phrase to protect your word document. Using a long PASS PHRASE (IE:I enjoyed myself today!) however with 10 or more characters will significantly increase the encryption strength of the document and decrease the likelihood someone will be able to break the encryption and gain access to your document.

Microsoft word document does not open


hi gvenkatmd,
please make sure:

  1. that you are using either the original microsoft program (Office)in your case(not an illegal copy) or try to open that file using any other textprogram(like freeware openoffice)
  2. try to find out if it's attributes have not been set to write protected(right-click the file, goto properties and perhaps untick the box write protected)
  3. think if the file perhaps rest on an non-alterable volume such as a CD (you will have to copy it to your harddisk before you can edit/change it
  4. the file format simply may have been set wrong, so that if you try to open it(right click start button, goto explorer and search for the file in all your drives, then right-click file again and see if it works with any other program

  • Click the Microsoft Office folder to open the list of programs.
  • Click a Microsoft Office program (such as Word or Excel) to launch the Activation Wizard.
  • In the wizard, enter your 25-character activation key. NOTE   If a box appears on this screen to type your 8-character referral key, you may leave the box empty. The referral key is not required to activate.
  • Click the Install Now button.
  • Re-open any Microsoft Office program.
  • Click Internet Activate on the pop-up screen to complete activation.

    If you are working on documents that are important and shouldn’t be changed, then there is a way to password protect them so they cannot be changed except by you. You can also make the documents unavailable to open unless the person has the password as well.

    Instructions

    Things You’ll Need:

    • A Computer

    • Microsoft Office with Microsoft Word

    • Word Documents

    • General Knowledge of Microsoft Word

    Step 1

    Open Microsoft Word and open or create the document that you want to password protect.

    try to use Windows Installer CleanUp Utility to fix the problem:

    or try this solution from Microsoft:

    1. Click Start and then click Run.
    2. In the Open box, type Regedit and then click OK.
    3. Locate and select the following key: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\9.0\Common
    4. Select the UserData DWORD value for the above key.
    5. On the Edit menu, click Rename.
    6. Rename the UserData DWORD value to UserDataOld.
    7. Find the following key: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\9.0\Common
    8. Find the following value: OSAShortcut. If it does not exist, create it. On the Edit menu, click New and then click Dword. Name the value OSAShortcut, and then set the value to 1.
    9. On the Registry menu, click Exit.
    10. Start any Office program.NOTE: The same Windows Installer dialog boxes appear one more time.

    11. When you are prompted, type your name and initials in the User Name dialog box, and then click OK.
