2 strokes have oil in the cylinder so a compression test may not show bad rings. But, having said that, it should have at least 100-125 psi. Most will be higher. Look for a weak cylinder. i.e.: one at 120, all the rest at 150.

SOURCE: friend has a 200 hp EFI oil injected 2 Stroke

I run a 175 Evinrude set up similar to this one.
If there are no warning lights or warning beeps you will have a restricted fuel filter or fuel line.
The reason you can throttle up slowly is because it takes less fuel flow to get to that point that way.
And at full throttle it takes more fuel flow to maintain speed.
If there are warnings you will need to get it scanned to find out the cause and have it repaired. Warnings can slow down the engine to help prevent engine damage.

Hard starting on Yamaha 130 2 stroke. Always starts easily with ether. Choke works well.

This can have some reasons:
1 clogged carburettors. Too less fuel means a hard start.
2 Worn spark plugs
3 Loss of compression... On a 2-stroke, measuring compression is not an exact science. Have throttle wide open. No spark plugs, check compression on all cylinders. They should be all within 1bar from eachother...

1998 1150412UD Mercury Outboard - is it 2 or 4 stroke

If it has an oil compartment, it has to be a two stroke. There is a rough and ready way to check. A four stroke engine has a compression stroke on every four strokes, whereas a two stroke has compression stroke on EVERY upward stroke of the piston. Remove the spark plugs, and turn the engine until you see the piston. Put your finger over the plug hole and turn the engine one revolution. Do you get compression? Keep turning, do you get suction and then compression again. If so it is a two stroke.

you can also follow the pipes from the oil tank and see where they go to? Yours should have a pipe from the pump to the carburetor inlet manifold.

On a new boat though, my advice for you is to take the boat and engine to a marine engineer for a service. The cost is minimal and you will get everything set up for the season, especially the carbs. You can ask lots of questions. The cost is about $150 and is well worth the piece of mind that you are not going to break down.

The critical bit you have missed from your post is the HP. If you Google

Mercury HP Serials

and you will end up at a site with engine details. Then google the same, but manual instead of serials. If you know the year of the boat, add that before 'Mercury'.

Use Evinrude XD50 two stroke oil. It is expensive but the best in clean running, non fouling and lack of acrid fumes. One $48 jug will last a season and a bit if you go out twice a week as I do. My boat goes to the marina on Wednesday :>)

18.5 hp lawn tractor will not turn over when on compression stroke . If you move it a little by hand past compression stroke it will start.

Sounds to me that you have a weak battery and is not putting out enough cranking amps..Takes more cranking amps during compression strokes to start than in down stroke...That is why you are able to start it in the down stroke less amps needed to turn motor over..

My craftsman air compressor #919176820 2 HP 12 gallon 200 max psi will not compress over 125 psi

If your compressor is oil-less type, most likely pressure is leaking past piston ring. To verify, remove cover to expose bottom of cylinder (unplug compressor and let out all air). With flashlight, examine the upper-most part of the cylinder (turn motor by hand till piston is at top of stroke). If top of cylinder is scratched, then pressure is leaking past.
For many years now, stores are in a race to have more HP and PSI to attract customers. Customer is really the loser because components used to make the units can not handle the higher pressure. Normally small 115v compressors are set to cut out at 125psi and larger two stage units will cut out at 160psi. Small compressor set to 200psi makes for short lived compressor. Could be compared to driving your car at 100mph all day every day. Longest life is attained when unit is being used at about 60 to 75 % of capacity.
To allow your compressor to reach cutout pressure and keep working for a while, lower cutout to 120psi (pressure switch may be adjustable). To restore to 200psi, replace cylinder/ ring.
If your compressor is oil type, suspect leaking reed valves.
