Fast forward and rewind seem to be working

The belts will have failed. You will need to replace them for the deck to be reliable. If you are mechanically minded I can talk you through it... You giving me a FixYa rating will help my profile and loosen my lips on how to overhaul your deck. :)

Hi,
I had a similar problem with A Mitsubishi cassette deck, several years ago.
The actual problem, is a sticking switch/relay/solenoid whichevers applicable in your case.
Without even opening up the casing or tampering with the Unit.
Try constant Stop/fast forward. Stop/rewind. power Off/On. You,ll find after several attempts, the deck will find it,s own stability level. and unstick whatever it is, thats jammed or seized.
As you have,nt used for a long period of time. You,ve gotta Coax it back to full functionality.
If you,ve got lots of patience, you,ll find that this will work.

Unit probably needs belts. Over time, belts may become slack or decompose into tar-like compound. In this case, the deck will need to be cleaned and belts replaced. Take to pro/tech

I suspect that only one capstan works, The belt driving it might be broken or something else on the drive.
