Wow, a tractor with points. That's rare these days. I believe your tractor was made between 1975 and 1987. It's a 200 series. Does it have the 14 hp Kohler?

Not sure about your problem. On a modern day tractor with electronic ignition, I would check the safety switch system. In your case, I would check the fuse, key switch, and look at the kill wire running off the coils to see if there is worn insulation. If you have seat safety or PTO switches check them too.

SOURCE: JD mower-only one coil firing

I just switched the coils around. The other cylinder went dead, so I knew I had a bad coil. Replaced the coil and mower runs great.

When it shuts down crack the fuel cap and listen for the woosh of a vacuum on the fuel tank. If you hear this, clean the pinhole vent in the fuel cap, or replace it. Being partially plugged would cause you to be starved for fuel and could explain your issue, and why it goes away after a period of time.

I get no spark on my JD lx277 even with new plugs

Hi
Sounds like you will need to replace your coils. To check to make sure that the coils are the problem unplug the single wire comeing out the side of the engine and check for spark if still no spark it is the coils.

Briggs ans Stratton Quantum 5.5 HP still no spark after changing coil and plug

You are correct, you have a flywheel with magnets in, an electronic ignition unit which when the magnets pass the ignition unit core at speed energises and creates a spark via the plug, the earth wire simply takes the unit to ground and shuts off the spark, the unit you changed was it definetly an electronic unit or just a coil? if electronic and you are cranking the engine fast enough and have the plug well earted against the cylinder with the earth wire not connected it should spark.

My 1974 shovelhead quits when i am riding, almost when its warmed up. I replaced the coil and breaker, neither helped. i noticed that the ground from the breaker to the frame gets warm. Any thoughts?

First off, I've never seen a breaker connected to the frame. They have two studs on them and they are wired in series with the circuit that they are designated to protect. Sometimes they do get warm because this is the way they work. If the circuit draws too much current, say due to a short, then the excessive current flow through the breaker heats it up to the point to where it "breaks". When it cools down, it resets. If the short circuit is still present, it'll simply heat up and "break" again. From what you've said, I'd suspect something to do with the fuel. It sounds like you're running out of fuel to the carb even though you may have a full tank of fuel. Try loosening the fuel caps as you may have a bad "vent" in the cap. If your bike as split tanks, the right side cap is the vented cap. Don't take the cap off or you may get a lap full of fuel. Just loosen up the caps and take it for a ride. If it does not quit, replace the cap. If it does quit, you've got to determine why. Carry an extra spark plug with you. When it quits, pull a spark plug wire and put the extra spark plug in the wire. Ground the plug to the cylinder head and spin the engine with the starter. Watch for the plug to spark. If it does not spark, you're losing ignition. If it does, you've got fuel problems.

Good Luck

I have a JD 1020. I installed , points, condensor, cap, rotor, coil and wires. I even installed a new ignition switch. I either get intermiten spark (very weak) or no spark. Not sure what I am doing wrong....

Doe's it run? Is it in time? If it runs and is in time. did you set the dwell? You have to have a dwell meter to set it. Unless you can guess. Adjust the screw on the points while it is running and see if it runs better. After you set it you have to set timming again. Or vise versa?
