Question about Refrigerators

1 Answer

My refrigerator motor doesn't start immediately if turned on, i's not like that before. Moisture and dew are forming in the fridge, that never happened before.

There are ice on the walls of the freezer but i don't think its working. What might be the problem and how is it going to be fixed?

Freezer /fridge water/ice in fridge and or freezer

Usually due to CONDENSATION due to bad door seals or a plugged evaporator drain line? Can use a soft flexable tubing and very hot water to clean it out. Bad door seals usually need replacement, but u can use a blow dryer and something to pry it closer to the door wall while blowing hot air on to it. To create a seal, to test for bad door seals place a dollar bill in between the door and wall of fridge where it closes. Then slide out the dollar bill with door closed. It should offer some resistance and not be easy to pull out.
Most all fridges have a drain. Look inside your fridge for a "V" shaped channel with a small hole. This hole leads to a tube and a small pan which sits on top of your refrigerator's compressor. The defrost cycle causes water to run into the channel, down the tube, and then it generally evaporates with the heat of the hot condenser/compressor.
However, if that tube is clogged with food crumbs, particles , debris etc, you will have to clear it to get back to a normal mode of operation. A toothpick, pipecleaner, straw or a cotton bud can often do the trick.
Even a frost free freezer will still ice up at times in the areas away from the heated defrost area and the drain line can freeze. This icing causes the pipe work to the compressor to ice over or sweat and cause a puddle. Or if the drainage has frozen over, it will need to be de-iced. ( usually the line is under the freezer bottom plate covering. Towards the back of the unit) And there is another inside the fridge area also.
Give the freezer a good overnight defrost until it's totally clear of ice in addition to making sure the drain is clear to the pan at the back and then restart the freezer.

Fridge not starting? CLICKING? FIRST ALWAYSCHECK FORpower at the outlet, checkfor 120 volts.

to check the defrost timer, u can get by and test manually by placing a small screw driver into the tiny slot or hole underneath the timer and turn slowly clockwise till u hear 1 click. this will engage ur defrost cycle in about 15 minutes u should be able to come back and feel the heat in freezer as it melts the ice providing ur terminator is not bad?
Another way to test it is with a multi meter. Remove timer it from fridge and you will see 4 prongs numbered 2,1,4,3 in that order. Place ur meter prong on prong 1 & 3 (if your fridge has a capacitor wired in series with the windings, then u check for micro fares rather than OHMS) If u cannot confirm this test, still try the next.
Take ur meter prong and connect to prong 1 & 4, it should read resistance or ohms ( closed) now remove prongs and place on prong 1 & 2, this should now read infinity or open (no ohms) now take a small screwdriver place it in the tiny hole or slot under the timer. Turn it clockwise slowly till u hear 1 click. Now ur 1& 2 should read closed ( showing ohms or resistance) now place meter prongs on 1 & 4 and you it should now show open ( or no resistance - no ohms) this is how u know ur timer is good, Remember when testing for ohms ADJUST meter to use a high ohms rating in the thousands as the resistance is very high in OHMS. And adjusting to low ohms rating may give a false reading or not show the proper resistance..

AT TIMES YOU MAY HEAR THE COMPRESSOR CLICK OFF AND ON OVER AND OVER. Signs of a bad start relay or capacitor. Check with an OHMS meter for continuity (ohms) and voltage, capacitor can be checked for Microfares.
To check ur compressor with multi meter:
Disconnect and remove the relay and capacitor from compressor, somes located next to compressor in a casing.

You wills see 3 prongs coming out of compressor. 1 goes to ur srtart winding, 1 goes to ur run winding and the center goes to ur ground.

Place ur meter connector or prong on the start prong and the other on the ground (center prong) take note of the reading in OHMS for example 5 ohms.
Next place meter prong on run prong and the center ground prong agin. Take note of the reading in OHMS. Example 4 ohms

Next place meter prong on the start prong and the other on the run prong, now take note of the reading example 9 ohms. Now match the total of this ohms test with the total of ur two separate test. 9 ohms, if they match ur ok give or take 5 percent plus or minus. One more test to make to test of there is a short in compressor attach meter prong to ground prong and rub the other end of meter prong to metal ( scrape the metal clean of paint and test on metal surface not painted surface. If it shows continuity or ohms , u have a short in ur compressor. It should show infinity

Testimonial: "hi Jhonny,,, I'm sorry for not getting back to you immediately, it's because i tried the solution you provided and I'm so thankful it works. What i did is simply give it an overnight defrost, i think the drainage has iced up. After the defrost it works again normally even the clicking from time to time disappears. thanks a lot."

May tag plus madel MBB2256GEW has condensation between the closed refrigerated and bottom freezer door . We already replaced the seal on the frig. but no luck, I open the frig door and it drips .

This is likely condensation that occurs when the surface of the door frame (the part the gaskets close against) drops below dew point. Dew point is the temperature at which moisture condenses and varies from day to day depending on temperature and humidity. Refrigerators have a "dew point compensator" that is either an electric mullion heater or a "Yoder" loop made up of a part of the condensor coil. Both supply a small amount of heat that keeps the surfaces above dew point. Be certain your box doesn't have a switch for "Energy Saver". If it does, then turn off the energy saver. This switch controls the mullion heater. Turning the energy saver off - and the mullion heater on - will prevent more moisture from forming. It will NOT remove moisture already there, just wipe that off first. Other external causes could be a HVAC duct blowing cold air on the refrigerator, a refrigerator/freezer door left slightly ajar or (the worst case) a separated heater inside the case. (On a foamed in place cabinet this is not repairable.)

This may occur in one of the following cases.
1) Use a wet cloth for wiping frostand a dry cloth for wiping dew.
2)When the ambient humidity is high.
3)When the door is frequently opened and closed.4
4)When foods containing plenty of moisture are stored. (Wrapping is required.)

My GE GDSS6KKXASS French Door refrigerator has frost/ice buildup on the back panel of the fridge, and it is especially bad around the holes in the panel. I can't tell where the water/moisture is coming...

The door seal is leaking. The air that circulates thru the fridge is where the moisture is coming from. Since it has to run more often to keep it at the right temp, the ice forms on the back. Replace the seal and the ice will disappear.

While the refrigerator is running, the center divider between fridge and freezer is hot to the touch. What should I do?

This is a normal condition. Certain areas of the fridge cases of many refrigerators get very warm to prevent moisture build-up. The spaces around doors (and the one you describe) is a common location for moisture to collect. Manufacturers have installed heaters in these locations to evaporate the moisture away. The heater should cycle on and off by itself. Moisture is more likely to form when it is humid and practically non-existent when it is relatively dry.

Additionally, your fridge may have a selector switch that allows you to enable or disable this heater. Shutting it off will reduce your operating costs - but may eventually lead to rusting if the moisture is not wiped dry. Most people will leave it on, some turn it on only in summer and others are fortunate enough not to need it at all.

I hope this was helpful - good luck!

The fridge part of the fridge freezer has a coating of ice forming at the back and it feels warm behind bottom right veggie tray

Sounds like the freezer/refrigerator circulating fan is starting to wear out, When the motor for this fan starts to wear out it does not supply enough circulation for the freezer and the refrigerator. The minimum cost to repair/replace this fan is around $300.00. The immediate solution is to unplug you unit for about four hours allowing the ice that has formed around this fan to melt. Or use a hair dryer to melt the ice, but be very careful not to melt the plastic.

Properly Insulated refrigerant lines of aircond are sweating outside and moisture or dew formed along the surface of foam insulation. what will be the possible root cause?

The root cause is the temp of the lines are below the Dew Point of the surrounding ambient air. Improper charge, low load/ air flow, wrong insulation, improper superheat, are all items that can cause this condition. You may have to look further into whats going on.

Hope this points you in the right direction.

"Dew" sitting on my Video Camera

Dew Formation
What is “dew formation”?
When cold water is poured into a glass,
dew drops form on the glass. This clinging
of water drops is called dew formation.
When dew forms in your camcorder.
Dew will gradually form on the head drum
of your camcorder and make the video
tape stick to the head. This causes
damage both to the head and the tape.
When dew forms, recording and playback
may not function properly.
Dew is likely to form in the following
—When moving the camcorder from a
cold place to a warm place.
—When placing the camcorder in a cold
room which is then heated rapidly.
—When moving the camcorder outdoors
from an air conditioned room or car.
—When placing the camcorder in the
direct path of air
blowing from an air
—When placing the
camcorder in a
humid room.
How to prevent trouble.
When using the camcorder in a place
where dew is likely to form, allow the
camcorder and the video tape to
acclimate to the surroundings for about
one hour.
For example, when bringing the
camcorder indoors after skiing, place it in
a plastic bag.
1Be sure to tightly seal the plastic bag
containing the camcorder.
2Remove the bag when the air temperature
inside it reaches the temperature
of the room.
“Dew” warning feature
If dew forms, the word “DEW” flashes on
the screen, and the power will automatically
turn off in approximately 10 seconds.
Plastic bag
1If “DEW” flashes, remove the cassette,
leave the cassette compartment open,
and wait for a few hours to allow the
camcorder to acclimate to the
surrounding temperature.
2To use the camcorder again, turn on the
power after waiting for a few hours. Be
sure that “DEW” has disappeared.
3Do not insert a cassette while “DEW” is
flashing; this may result in damage to
the tape.
4Since dew forms gradually, it may take
10 to 15 minutes before the dew
warning feature engages.

Flashing "DEW" Indicator shutting down the viewcam

I don't know if this will help, but when I leave the camera open with no tape in it for a day or so, "dew" goes away. Now I just store it open without a tape in it and have never had this problem again.

Hope this helps.
