Question about Heating & Cooling
Sometimes it is required to depress the knob prior to moving from the 'off' position to the 'pilot' position. In the pilot position, it must be held down to light the pilot then released after 30 -45 seconds then rotated to the 'on' position.
The internals of your gas valve could very well be oxidizing slightly causing operation of the knob to be difficult. This could happen if the device was stored without the gas piping sealed which allows humidity in the air to condense on the internal pipe threads of the valve body and related piping. Those few grains of moisture are then carried into the internal workings of the gas valve once gas is turned on and the unit is put into use.
If the knob does not free up with minimal effort, the valve itself should probably be replaced. Remember, it is a control device that is responsible for shutting off the gas flow and if one portion of it is gummy and difficult to move, other important INTERNAL parts could be in the same condition and fail to close properly creating an unsafe condition by overheating.

Did you push the knob in first? It's a must.
