Question about Computers & Internet

In my windows favorites are 18 (identical) files that REFUSE to be deleted - says the filename is too long. What can I do?

I was shopping for a frigidaire and when I found what I wanted I added it to "favorites" to return to it. Apparently each time I clicked on it it multiplied and now I have 18 copies of a "shop frigidaire" with a very long filename. It says it's too long to delete, but I can't rename it.

What version of Windows are you using?

Windows 7 - 64 bit - I've gone into "Favorites" and erased all of them, but it won't erase those 18 Frigidaire webpages (all the same) with the long filename. Says to rename it but Windows won't let me. If it's not solvable it's OK - I have to go down 18 lines before I hit my favorites but so what - there's no real damage. It's a laptop. Try locating the files, at the search box type cmd. A DOS box will open, navigate to the unwanted files and delete them.

Testimonial: "I did that - quite successfully but the files never showed up under the command prompt. I even tried downloading a special "erase" utility but when I tried to locate the files they didn't even show up in it. It's OK - there's no damage to the computer, I just can't figure out why they won't delete. Thank you for your help!"

Did you try to reboot the computer and try to delete, or change the names after the reboot? Sometimes the links are locked in a process and you only can stop that by stopping the running program.

I had checked the link and the filename is wrong. Try to recheck the filename or verify if the file is still alive. Most file sharing website delete files after a copule of days or months.

My bad files cannot be deleted!!!

I would Boot into "DOS" or to the C:> prompt WITHOUT loading windows, (from the same window that you enter safe mode from), and find the suspect files and delete them.  del <filename.ext>

Tip

Delete an undeletable File

Open a command Prompt window and leave it open.
close all open programs.
click Start, Run and enter TASKMGR. EXE
Go to the Processes tab and End Process on Explorer. exe.
Leave Task Manager open.
Go back to the command Prompt window and change to the
directory the AVI ( or other undeletable file) is located
in.
At the command prompt type DEL <filename> where <filename>
is the file you wish to delete
Go back to Task Manager. click File, New Task and enter
EXPLORER.EXE to restart the GUI shell.
close Task Manager.

or you can try this

Open NOtepad.exe

click File>Save as..>

locate the folder where ur undeletable file is

choose "All files" from the file type box

click once on the file u wanna delete so its name appears
in the "filename" box

pur a " at the start and end of the filename
(the filename should have the extension of the undeletable
file so it will overwrite it)

click save,

It should ask u to overwrite the existing file, choose yes and u can delete it as normal

Here's a manual way of doing it. I'll take this off once you put into your first post zain.

1. Start
2. Run
3. Type: command
4. To move into a directory type: cd c:\*** (The stars stand for your folder)
5. If you cannot access the folder because it has to do the following. instead of typing in the full folder name only take the first 6 letters then put a ~ and then 1 without spaces.
Example: cd c:\progra~1\kazaal~1
6. Once your in the folder the non-deletable file it in type in dir - a list will come up with everything inside.
7. Now to delete the file type in del ***.bmp, txt,jpg,avi,etc... And if the file name has spaces ypu would use the specific folder throgh command, del badfil~1.bmp and your file should be gone. Make sure the type in the correct extension.

Del and delete do not support replaceable parameters (wild cards).

Notice: Users who are running Microsoft Windows 95 and are used to deleted items going to the recycle bin need to keep in mind that deleting files from MS-DOS does not send files to the recycle bin. del test.tmp = Deletes the test.tmp in the directory that you currently are in, if the file exists.
del c:windows est.tmp = Delete the c:windows est.tmp in the windows directory if it exists.
del c:windows emp*.* = (* is for wild character(s)) *.* indicates that you would like to delete all files in the c:windows emp directory.
del c:windows emp?est.tmp = (? is a single wild character for one letter) This command would delete any file ending with est.tmp such as pest.tmp or zest.tmp...

I have 5600 photos in my iphoto at present, but for some reason around a third of these are duplicated. this happened when I changed macs and nearly lost them all, was a nightmare. But. my question is, how...

if the mac has altered the filename to account for the duplication then you cant , ie , field of cows and field of cows1 is the same photo but a different file name , the mac sees two files , you see two of the same photo,Sorry , May be its a good thing. now you can go through all those photos and remember the days.

alternately , try using search function looking for filenames with the duplicate extension number , ie , search/jpeg/filename/1
