i took the carb off, took the float bowl off and used carb clean thru it and seems to work good?

  • Eugene Rounds Apr 16, 2015

Chad what is the make and model? Some carburetor have a main jet located in the bowl retaining bolt that will clog and need cleaning. Also stop using starter fluid as it will kill your engine as it washes all of the lubrication of the cylinder

Unlikely weak coil. More likely not getting fuel. Check fuel filter, carb float/needle valve.

Testimonial: "good fuel and fuel flow. took carb off and float needle and seem are working as should"

  • Jay Plesset Apr 16, 2015

after you try to start it, is the plug wet? Fuel to the carb does not prove fuel is getting to the engine. Is there a lean/rich setting on your carb? Try using a little gas instead of starter spray. If it runs ok on that, it's your carb.

I have a cub cadet GT 2550. Has new battery cranks but will not start. Thinking it's not getting fuel. Checked fuel filter and fuel flows through.

If spraying starter fluid in the intake causes it to run for a few seconds, then you have a fuel problem. That starter fluid is the fuel. If it didn't have spark, it still wouldn't run. I would start checking the carb and make sure nothing is stuck or plugged.

clean your carb out, not getting enough gas I guarantee you didn't run wire thru your jets best thing to do is take the carb to your nearest lawnmower repair shop to have them soak it in cleaning solution for a day or to and have them put a carbkit in it

On this cart, I have cleaned out carb twice. Battery good. It runs shortly then dies out. Micro switchesx4 has been replaced. Spark plug good. Gas is good and getting to carb.

Determine if it is running out of fuel or no spark.
If it stalls but will run on carb spray or starting fluid
sprayed in carb opening then the fuel has problems.
If it will not run on the starting fluid then the spark is weak
or failing due to bad wiring or coils. Once you isolate
the problem to fuel or spark then you can probe those areas.
Be sure compression is good also. 100 psi at least.

I have 1985 cadillac fleetwood brougham that will not start. I replaced fuel pump and it still wont start. But if you spray starter fluid in caberator/fuel injector. It will start but one that runs out ,...

Did you change the fuel filter it maybe plugged. The fuel regulator maybe weak or not working as well. It is definitely a fuel problem. Is the engine carb or throttle body as I am not sure. If it is a carb the pump in the carb maybe weak or if it is a TBI then check and make sure the injectors are opening in key on position before start up. Hope this helps.

I have and echo bp250 runs but has no power change carb but didn't help is there something iam missing

Hello Margaret,
I would purchase a compression tester from a local parts store and check compression. They simply screw into the spark plug threads, then you pull on the starter rope a few times and observe the reading. You should have at least 60 psi of compression. If compression is good, I would then check spark. Spark testers are fairly cheap and are available at your local parts store too. If you just replaced the carb, Im willing to bet you will find your answer with the two solutions I mentioned. If spark is weak, the coil can be adjusted closer to the flywheel. If compression is weak, your probably looking at a new cylinder/piston and may not be worth fixing. Hope this helps. Good luck and happy wrenching!

My ryobi trimmer want hit a lick. The spark plug is firing. But will not hit. I tried a small spray of starter fluid in the carb and still nothing. Could this be the fly wheel is out of time ?

Try removing the air filter...hold throttle open and either squirt or pour about a teaspoon of FRESH fuel mixture into the carb throat...be sure that the fuel enters the cylinder through the throat....hold the throttle open and pull start handle and if you have spark it should start and run for a few seconds...if not you may have an electrical problem (weak magneto = weak spark ) ... if it starts and runs your problem may be in the carb (clean or rebuild) DO NOT use starter fluid to do this test...it is too volatile and you may blow the head right off your machine...also check the four screws on the rear cover (the four screws above the gas tank) they may have loosened and are allowing an air leak at the rear of the crankcase. these covers are plastic and have a tendency to warp under the heat generated by the engine. There is a gasket between the cover and the metal crankcase, and if the cover is warped it may be letting air through into the case....can cause a no start situation. do a cursory inspection of your fuel lines , fuel filter, and the primer bulb and check tightness of the carb bolts as cracks here also allow air leaks in the fuel system. If you've been using starting fluid to try and start your engine you might also want to check the head gasket and front crank seal to make sure you haven't blown a hole in them...good luck...;-D

Not getting fuel, burns only starter fluid

Ok, what you need to do is pull the bowl off the carburetor, and look at the nut that you took off to get the bowl off. There is a hole that goes through the bottom, and down the center, meeting in the center. This is a metering hole that allows fuel to go to the carb. If this gets plugged, then your engine will act exactly as you describe. Use a piece of wire/wire brush bristle to clean the holes, and clean it with carb cleaner or starting fluid. Check the needle valve on the float and make sure it's free while you're at it. You'll know; if it's free, you'll be getting fuel leaking while you're doing this, so I would clamp the fuel line with a pair of vise grips to that liquid gold doesn't get away once you've determined the status of the needle valve. Put it all back together, and you should be fine.

sounds like a broken connecting rod pull the spark plug out put your finger over the hole then crank it over to see if you have compression it should push your finger just make sure you dont touch the coil wire in the process

Have to use starter fluid to start my car

Starving for fuel. Start by making sure the fuel pump is running. Turn the ignition on without starting the car and listen for the pump. It should run for a few seconds and then shut off if you don't start the engine. If you hear nothing, check the fuse. If the fuse is good then it can be a defective fuel pump relay, pump itself. If you hear the pump run and then shut off, suspect a clogged fuel filter, defective fuel pressure regulator, or an extremely weak fuel pump that is running but pumping no fuel.
