SOURCE: I have 16 hp Craftsman riding mower with a Kohler engine.

It may think you are in reverse and is killing the motor to keep you from backing up with the blade running. Look for switch that is telling it when you are in reverse, maybe it is stuck with grass or other debris. another possibility is that the blades are jammed and they are stalliing the motor. Mines stalls easily when cold.

SOURCE: engine stalls when clutch/brake pedal is released

Under the seat, there is a operator presence switch, if this switch fails, the mower will shut off when the brake is released, or put in any gear.

SOURCE: riding mower dies when releasing brake

the seat switch is the problem. the switch itself could be bad, but usually theproblem is that the connector is just not plugged in all the way [by the way, trying to bypass the switch by inserting the wire doesn't work because there is a "switch" inside the connector to prevent you from doing just what you did]

Murray ride on cuts our when releasing the clutch. Starts ok, have checked fuel supply to carb, air filter, spark plug, oil level .?..

Is this only when releasing the clutch? I assume it runs good other than that? I would check three things first. Compression, spark and fuel. Compression should be at least 50-60 psi. If that's good hook up an inline spark tester and start unit and observe while releasing the clutch, If you loose spark when releasing clutch if probably a safety switch(similar to safety switch on seat that grounds unit out when you get off the seat)
If you have good spark when releasing the clutch and good compression, its probably a clogged carb. This is the route I would take. I hope this helps. Good luck!

You are going to have to disconnect belt and try to turn pulleys on drive system to locate the excact location. It sounds like a belt tension or bearing problem to me.

The rubber strap is most likely the battery hold-down strap. It should be stretched up over the top of the battery.
As for not moving when the clutch is released, check the drive belt that runs from the engine back to the top of the transaxle. Check for condition as well as positioning. Is it tight when the brake/clutch is released. Remove the dust caps off both rear wheels and start up the tractor, let out on the clutch/brake and observe the axle in the center of both rear wheels. If one of them is turning without the tractor moving, you have lost the square key that pins the wheel and axle together

Lawn tractor won't stay running if clutch is released.

There is an operator presence switch under the seat...it is more than likely faulty and must be replaced in order for the mower to run right.
