Question about Drills

1 Answer

The Drill came with a phillips/screwdriver bit. I don't know how to insert it. I don't know what drill bits to buy and how to insert them either. My model doesn't have a chuck key or side handle.

Most new cordless drills don't have a key. Put the drill in reverse and hold tight to the chuck barrel, pull trigger and the chuck will open. Opposite to close/tighten Best I can do with info provided

How to remove a drill bit from insert of screw that holds on driver on an elecctric drill?

do you have the "chuck key"? this is the tool you will need to undo the chuck (part which holds the drill bit). it is often stored in holder in handle of drill. If you dont have chuck key you can improvise using 2 slot head screwdrivers: insert one into one of the 3 holes around chuck, then insert the other into the teeth around check and lever against the 1st screwdriver.

Don't know how to attach a screw on to my corded Skil 3/s drill. Is there a special bit for this purpose?

Hi auntygamma,

Welcome to fixya!

Yes, you need to use a bit with all drills. They come in different sizes and shapes. If you don't have any bits to put into your drill, an all purpose kit would be nice to have. You can find them at your local hardware store or online.

Check out this webpage: http://www.toolup.com/dewalt_dw2163_37-piece-screwdriving-set-with-tough-case.aspx

Copy and paste this entire web address into your browser and a page with one of the kits on it will open up for you. You don't have to buy a kit with lots of bits, you can pick up just one or two bits that you would use the most at the hardware store. The most used bits would be the #1 and #2 Phillips bits and a couple of different sizes of flat bladed bits. A few drill bits might come in handy too.

The drill that you have has a keyless chuck. This means you don't need any special tools to put in a bit or change one. If you look at the chuck, you'll see that the ridged part has two sections. If you hold the back section with your left hand, you can turn the front section to either open the chuck or close it to put bits in.

I don't know if this was clear or not, but if you have any problems or more questions about this, please be sure to reply back. I'll be glad to help you.

Thanks,
Handie Andie

I have the aeg phe 19rl impact drill. I bought it at a garage sale, but now I realize I don't know how to insert the drill bits and make them secure. They have notches along the side at the base of...

both answers are wrong above. With the chuck end facing you make sure the chuck is shifted to the counterclockwise position. You can now insert the bit by lining up the slots on the end of the chuck with the hollowed out area of the bit shaft, not the grooves in the bit shaft. Now when you have the bit inserted, shift the chuck to clockwise to lock in the bit.

Have never used a hand dill, how do i change the drill bit. i need to drill a small hole. thank you anne

Typically, the end of the drill where the bit is inserted (called the 'chuck') rotates to loosen or tighten the arms holding the bit in place. Grasp the top of the drill with one hand and rotate the end the bit is inserted into counter-clockwise if the bit end is pointed towards you to loosen the arms and release the bit.

If it is an older drill it may have a 'key' that would look similar to end of a phillips screwdriver on a tee that can be inserted into where the chuck and the rest of the drill assembly meet and twisted to loosen the bit.

If neither of these work post what type of drill you are using as not all hand drills are the same. Hope this helps.

Remove existing phillips no chuck avalible in this model

Take a phillips screw driver and stick it into one of the key holes. Then take a flat head screwdriver and stick in one of the slots. And prise against the phillips.

Or you can wrap a belt or strap around the chuck hold it tight, then put the drill in reverse and unscrew it.

Drill bit won't in securely - Black & Decker DP240 Screwdriver

I am going to assume that the bit you are trying to insert is a 1/4 hex drive. If so are you pulling or pushing on the collar of the tool holder to insert or remove a bit. Make sure that the hex on the bit is not twisted also. Let me know and I will go from there.

Changing bits

Without a model number I am guessing but you should have to either pull back on the outer collar or push forward to release the bit in the hex driver. If this doesn't work give me the brand and model number and I will find a user manual to look at and let you know where you can get it.
