Hello Jim, You could have a blown head gasket or a damaged reed valve in the cylinder head. Make sure the air intake filter is not clogged.

Craftsman air compressor model 191.135131 wont build pressure

I can not find a Craftsman compressor with that model number anywhere so here are a couple things to look into. If the compressor fills to 70psi and keeps on running check the valve plate and piston/cylinder assemblies. Check that the valve reeds on the valve plate are not bent, broken or warped from heat. Then check that the wiper (oil less) or pistion rings (oil splash) are not damaged and that the cylinder wall is not scarred up. Any of these will let the compressor fill up to the point where the air pressure leaks past the valves or piston and won't fill any further. If the compressor fills to 70psi then shuts off the problem is in the pressure switch. Some have an adjustment screw or bolt to control when it turns on and shuts off. If you had a drop from 100 to 70 the springs may be weak or broke and you'll have to replace the switch.

My Campbell Haufield compressor does not shut off once it fills up why?

If the motor pumps the tank up to the maximum pressure then keeps on running you have a broken pressure regulator. Replace it, as over filling the tank can be extremely dangerous. The pressure regulator listed by C-H for your compressor is part number CW210100SJ and should cost you $40 to $45.

Are you hooking within 5ft of the outlet? If you are running a cord, then the cord can't keep the amp rating needed to run the compressor. I have one that does the exact thing. Try plugging it in close.

You did not list model number, however if you have oilless type check the cylinder/piston by manually turning crank until piston is at top and examine cylinder for wear or scratches. If worn replace cylinder kit for full pressure. If ok check reed valves /valve plate for wear or broken reeds. If oil bath type, problem is usually air leak or reed valves / valve plate. As a general rule, you can keep track of wear by noting how many minutes it takes to fill the tank to cut-out. As the compressor wears it will take increasingly longer to fill. When new, and depending on tank size/ hp, most compessors fill within 2 ~ 5 min. Good luck

Compressor motor only comes on and fills tank when tank is empty. When tank has any pressure it tries to start but stops.

there is a valve under the regulator, at switch off pressure the valve must blow of the air between cilinder and checkvalve after stop running.. when checkvalve is not closed it keeps blowing.
