Open Question

I am trying to replace the finial rod that attaches to the diverter assembly.

The knob on the rod came loose and Delta sent me a replacement part. The problem is that the original plumber inserted the rod backwards and I can't get it to unscrew from the diverter assembly. I have tried to remove the spout but despite removing the set screw the spout will not remove with the rod still attached. When I try to unscrew the rod it just turns and turns. How do I remove it if I can't get to the diverter?

SOURCE: Removing bath drain

There are two types of tub drain stoppers for the delta brand - lift & turn and toe tap.

Lift and Turn:
The lift & turn stopper for the bathtub unscrews counterclockwise while in the full up position.

Toe Tap:
The toe tap stopper does also but if the cap may unscrew from it before the entire stopper comes out. In that case, there is a nut that is now exposed and can be accessed to unscrew the assembly.

If either of these is "spinning" without unscrewing, the threads are stripped and you would need to exert upward pressure while unscrewing in hopes of uncoupling this from the bath waste. If that doesn't work you would have to unscrew the bath waste flange from the drain pipe.
This will require access under the tub. I hope this answer the question for you. Thank you for using FIXYA. Jeff

SOURCE: i am trying to replace

yes most are screwed on (ritey titey lefty loosey) if you can send a pic that would be the next best thing to knowing the model # since you probably don't have a pair of channel locks (pliars) w/rubber jaws just use a wash cloth or something and carefully remove the ring hope this helps:)

Not a problem .your terminology is fine and you are right The diverter assemble screws out and you replace just that part. As long as you can get the nut loose you should be in business. You don't have a very thick area to get a hold of so use a deep sccket if you can.
You should be able to get repair parts fairly easily but you may have to go to a plumbing supply . Good luck and thank you.

One of 2 things is happening. Either the o-ring is shot, or you have a hairline fracture of the plastic around the brass adapter. The o-ring is a #18, but if there's a crack in the plastic you'll need to replace the spout.

I need to replace the push button diverter valve

Take off the knob (screw on bottom of knob)
Take off the face plate (two screws usually hidden by knob)
If you can get a crescent wrench on the diverter's hex shaped part, carefully put the wrench on just the diverter valve portion-it's like a quarter inch wide. righty tighty, lefty loosey. If it doesn't turn, hit it with WD 40, blaster, liquid wrench, etc. and let that soak in. If it still won't turn, call a plumber because you don't want to brute force it-copper pipes bend and break really easily. Don't let your life become a Lucy skit for the price of an hour of plumber.
If it spun and came out, take it to the plumbing store and find the replacement part. There are only two; one chrome, one bronze, as far as I know from my bathroom adventures. Get some teflon tape as well.
Take the matching new one, wrap the threads with a wrap of teflon tape, and carefully thread it in where the old one went by hand until you can't turn it more. Then go another turn or two with the crescent wrench being delicate, not like big angry gorilla. Test it before you replace the knob and face plate to see if it leaks-you don't want it piddling behind your wall. If it works and doesn't piddle, replace the faceplate and then the knob and take a shower.

Water sprays out the diverter

Remove hot/cold button in handle, remove screw/pull off handle. Remove the two screws in the wall plate/remove plate. Use a wrench to remove the diverter assembly. Get new diverter assy and reinstall eveything. You don't need to turn off the water.

Yes, the diverter assembly is probably corroded or clogged shut. Garunteed its the problem on a 10 year old delta kitchn faucet. The diverter routes water from the spout to the sprayer when the sprayer is triggered.

Delta diverted spout is stuck! Can't pull it down

You probably have lime deposits built up which won't allow you to pull it down anymore. Try spraying lime away on it and use an onld toothbrush and work it up in there. If this doesn't work, you can replace the spout with a generic one. The spout should just twist off. Sometimes they can be stubborn. Hopefully this helps.
