Question about Refrigerators

1 Answer

My refrigerator is not keeping temp and there is a code on the water/ice machine reads S(or 5)y EF. What does this code indicate?

I purchased my s/s refrigerator/freezer in Feb 2011. Both the freezer and fridge side has lost temp. I was lucky enough to catch it before everything was spoiled. A couple of days ago, I heard a whining sound coming from around the ice maker area. I shut the ice maker off thinking it was coming from that. This did not cause the sound to stop but it eventually did. The only reading I get on the display on the freezer door says "5y EF" or "Sy EF". I have been unable to track down what this code indicates. I am not home very often so it is hard for me to constantly keep checking how it if functioning. Is this a circuit board issue, a compressor issue, a thermostat issue? Can it be repaired? Can I repair it myself? Is it easier/cheaper to just buy a new refrigerator? Thank you. Tracey Wilkinson

If I'm not mistaken EF error code stands for Evaporator Fan which is the fan motor in the back of the freezer section. That would explain the noise you heard. The fan could possibly be frozen or stuck or the motor actually went bad and needs replaced. Without that fan running you will get very little cooling.

My Frigidaire Gallery refrigerator showing HI temp.and with code5Y and EF, what does it mean?

An EF code is indicative of an Evaporator Fan Circuit Failure. Can it be stopped by ice or frost? Absolutely. Press the freezer up button and the freezer down button simultaneously for 6-8 seconds and you will enter a test mode. Every time you press the fresh food button after entering the test you will advance to the next test. They are not in numerical order. Go to test 26 (The defrost circuit test) and it will show CL for closed or OP for open. If it shows OP you have a defrost issue. If CL there is no defrost problem. Next go to test 15 - keeping in mind they ( the tests are Not in numerical order). When you get to 15 press the main power on/off button. The 1st time you press it the display will show LO and the fan should be on low speed. The next time you press the power button it will show HI, and the fan should be on high. It is a twelve vdc fan motor wire colors red, yellow, brown, and blue. They originate at the j6a and j4a connectors. If the fan does not come on in the test the check will be made at the control. There should always be 12vdc between brown and red, and there should be 9 - 12 vdc between brown and yellow in the test. The blue wire is a tach wire and feeds info back to the lower control which is located behind the kick plate underneath the unit. EX factory service 22 years currently an instructor. Model C0330SA-1A sump temp sensor failure

Sump temp sensor is not reading water temperature of water running over evaporator plate. This sensor is located in the water supply tube that runs up to the top of the evaporator plate. just pull the sensor out of the tube and replace it.

SY EF electrolux

Hi daneilb101 - Typically error code SY EF indicates that the refrigerator has detected an evaporator fan circuit failure. Contact a professional to move forward accurately. The wiring between the main control board and evaporator fan will need to be check and diagnose. Depending on the diagnoses the main control board may need replacing.

What does "Sy EF" mean on dispenser led?

Error Code SY EF is the System Evaporator Fault.
This usually means there is NOT enough air flow over the sensor, this can mean a faulty sensor, or fan.
Above is the latest service sheet to do with your machine, you need to check this.

Hope this helps (remember to rate and commnent this)..

Temp set at 5(as always) but food in the refrigerator is freeezing. Ice maker and water distpenser do now work. just started happening.

Try unclogging the drain line for the freezer. What seems to be happening is your refrigerator is working too hard to keep the temperature that it reads inaccuately. Usually a light defrost will do the trick , sometimes a longer defrost or one using warmers...don't be too tempted to use anything like a hair dryer for safety reasons.

Make sure you keep your frig door closed and use the frozen food in the frig to hold temps down.

Good luck.

Whirlpool gd5shaxkqoo side by side ice maker

Hi. It takes approximatly 3 days to fill the ice container. If it is filling it half way, it should fill it all the way. There is no reason for it to stop making ice unless a cube gets stuck occasionally. Try replacing the water filter. If you are using reverse osmosis to filter your refrigerator water then that is your problem. Refrigerator ice makers don't work well with most reverse osmosis systems. Good luck, Mack
