SOURCE: My hard drive is coming on but the computer is not recognizing it

When a hard disk makes a clicking sound and the computer does not detect it then the hard disk is faulty. This is commonly known as "The click of death".
There is no way of fixing this hard drive, if you need to recover your data, then there are companies that can recover data off faulty hard drives BUT it will cost you an arm and a leg for their services.

The hard drive is not recognized by a osx 10.4.11 laptop

There should be no need for a driver for an external hard drive by any manufacturer, so if the drive is not working with your Mac, then I would say that either the drive is formatted in a standard that the Mac does not know or it is not formatted at all. In either case, try it on another machine (especially if you have a Windows-based machine available to you) and see whether the drive works (as it could also be a defective drive). If so, then that would just indicate that there is a problem with the drive being recognized by the Mac and, therefore, you just need to determine the problem in communication between the Mac and the drive. At that point, I would suggest getting in touch with a local computer support professional to assist you and get you up and running.

I have a mac. how do i get the 320 to work? i already have stuff backed up on it from my old computer which was windows.

Your Mac can't recognize the 320 because it's formatted as NTFS and Mac uses Mac OS Extended (Journaled) format. You need to install one or two apps on the Mac; Crossover or Parallels, and then install the Windows software on the Mac you need to read and use the files.

At that point, some files which share file types in Windows and Mac could be transfered (jpeg, mp3-4, etc.)

You'll learn maybe more than you wanted to,

Good Luck,

Marcus

The blue light on my Maxtor is blinking really fast and my Mac no longer recognizes the connection. How can I fix this?

Have you tried restarting your Mac (with the Drive still connected)?

Otherwise try:

1. Disconnect the USB cable from your Mac.
2. Restart your Mac.
3. Reconnect the USB cable to a different USB port on your Mac (like the keyboard USB port for example).

See how you get on. Let me know. Regards,

You should give Test Disk a try. It's a little complicated at first but if you read the tutorial it's easy.

When connected by USB cable removable hard disk does not appear in Windos Explorer. However, on other peoples PCs, the disk is visible.

your computer is probably naming it F: or something, but your PC already has a device issued to that letter.

Right-click on 'My Computer', it will open a 'Computer Management' window. On the left side, under 'Storage'.. click on 'Disk Management'. It will show some devices like your c: drive and d: drive.. does it recognize your removable hard drive?... if it does then right-click on it and choose 'Change Drive Letter'. CLick on the 'Change' button and change the drive letter to Q or X or something ...then apply it close the windows... then open Windows Explorer and see if you see your removable hard drive now.

good luck.

Hard Drive not mounting

Check the jumper on each hard-drive.

My guess is that the WD drive has the jumper in the "correct" position, for mounting inside an external case, while the other drives have their jumper set to an "incorrect" position.

Set the jumper to MA(ster), not to SL(ave), nor to C(able)S(elect).
