Question about HP Pavilion Computers & Internet

2 Answers

I have an HP Pavilion a340n. I'd like to install a video card upgrade, but need to uninstall the existing video card.

HP Pavilion a340n- I am not sure that I can do it thru BIOS or if I have to disconnect a jumper, which means I need a motherboard diagram. Looking to install ATI V9000-P256 and uninstall INTEL(R)828656 Graphics Controller. Need motherboard schematic. Can you help?

I have done that. Tried disabling video card on motherboard. Did this in device mamnagement. Changed primary selection to PCI in BIOS. Cannot disable old graphics card in BIOS, as was recommend elsewhere. I get ghost stripes on my monitor. The manufacturer of the ATI card says to disable the old graphics card by disconnecting the jumpers, but I have no idea about how to do that. I'm about ready to give up as I've tried everything.

Don't do that! Set BIOS to defaults values then save and reboot to settings again. Verify that graphic is set to 'Auto'. Reboot into system. Wait until Windows (you're on Win, right? - otherwise steps to follow will be different) find proper drivers and install them. If that doesn't happen for some reason, download and install drivers suitable for your system. Don't care about old card: if windows doesn't see it it will 'hide' it. If there're any problems with windows start try to reboot in safe mode. That should work (no additional video drivers installed, just basic)

    What system you're running on?

I'm running Windows XP and my computer is old, but other than the graphics card is working fine. Over the years I've upgraded the memory and installed a hard drive with tons of storage. Microsoft doesn't support it and when I go to their website they just want me to buy a new computer. I cannot afford the computer that I want, so I need to keep this one going as long as I can until I can afford what I want.

Yeah, I've checked it. Elisabeth, why don't you consider to buy a cheap computer over eBay? You can easily got one for a good below $100 - don't look for a high-end PCs, but HP SFF with quad core and 4G RAM - real. May be it'll be "as-is" and needs a HD or something like that. I have sen a lot of alike in a range of $40-$70.

Don't do anything like that. Just replace with no power on system, of course.

What is the PCI speed?

I think the question is which pci slots do you have. You have PCI. You do NOT have PCI Express.. to confirm, see picture here:
Conventional PCI

PCI Express Has MUCH smaller connectors and several speeds

PCI Express is not to be confused with PCI-X
A pix will help:

Various slots on a computer motherboard, from top to bottom:
  • PCI Express ×4
  • PCI Express ×16
  • PCI Express ×1
  • PCI Express ×16
  • Legacy PCI (32-bit, 5 V)

I have an HP Pavilion a706n PC and I just replaced my old monitor with a new LG E2040 monitor. I need to upgrade my video card and don't know what I can or should upgrade to.

If the existing graphics card works with your new monitor, there isn't need to upgrade the graphics card unless you have a specific need such as a graphics intensive games program that doesn't work with the old graphics card.

Want to increase the speed of my pc

Hello alanwemple,

Increasing the RAM is surely a good first step to speeding your computer up some. It was my impression that the a340n supports a total of 4GB, so you might want to recheck your manual. And 4GB would certainly be better than 2. As for the CPU, it's upgradeable on this machine, it uses a "Socket 478" chip. Simply remove the old one and insert a new one. But, the CPU is probably not contributing that much to your slowness problem.

Two things that I'd look at first, before I tackled the CPU is video performance and the hard drive. A faster video card with more video RAM can substantially speed things up. And, the hard drive may need some maintenance, starting with defrag. You may also want to do a disk cleanup and while you are at it, run a full virus check and malware detection program such as MacAfee or Norton to make absolutely sure that no bad stuff is slowing you down. And these are cheaper than replacing the CPU.

Hope this helps.

Upgrading HP Pavilion 764n RAM and Video Card

THe best performance would be achieved by upgrading this PC to the maximum allowed. If you are not sure the max, go to and enter in your model. The video card is not as important. If the hard drive is slow or the performance is still slow after a memory upgrade, you might want to reformat and reinstall Windows.
