Question about Pool & Spa

2 Answers

I have a Polaris 280 and one of the two screws that holds one of the wheels on is stripped.

The pool store wants me to buy a new Polaris, but I thought I would ask if there is another less expensive fix as it is otherwise working fine.

You are referring to the wheel axle. The axle is held together to the vac sweeps base, with two bolts and nuts. What you can do, is remove the stripped one, going thru to get another new STAINLESS STEEL, bolt with a matching nut, and tighten it from the bottom. You will need to get access to the bottom, by removing bottom cover - two fasteners hold that.
Don't be intimidated, it doesn't matter what you use - a bolt or ???, you just want to secure the axle to the base. I would recommend a bolt and nut.
I added a link below, to show a diagram of the unit all taken apart.
Area of significance: Parts 13-16 The nuts, are recessed in a small Divet in the bottom of the middle bass.

Where I mentioned 2 screws: That was in reference to the "AXLE" as it attaches to the main center portion of the cleaner. Yes, I agree the "Wheel" ***** is only 1 ***** and it is plastic. They break commonly - head comes off or the slot is stripped. If the head is gone or non usable with a screwdriver. Drill a hole then ***** in a wood ***** - not too tight, otherwise you risk tightening broken plastic ***** shaft. Use a drop or 2 of SuperGlue in the drilled hole, then let sit. Once dry & cured, use a ***** driver to unscrew the ***** and "Voila", out comes the broken ***** shaft.

I was looking at photos and I see only one screw holding a wheel on - so I'm perplexed as to how two screws would do this and still be able to turn.

Anyway.. the generic way of solving a stripped screw hole is to drill and tap the hole to the next size greater screw and supply a new screw that would match the hole and tapped threads. You would also need to enlarge the hole(s) of whatever the screw passes through (wheels?).

If enlarging holes isn't an option, consider filling the hole in. A recommended material is JB Weld. Consult the web site to help you select the JB Weld product that would work best with the material that it will be in contact with. Apply as per instructions. Allow to cure / setup. Then, drill and tap the hole to match the original screw. reassemble.

My wheels are not turning on polaris 280

Make sure that your thrust jets are properly positioned. You will also want to check for any obstructions in the wheels or axles that would restrict movement. Often with these automatic pool cleaners, one of these two problems is causing restricted movement in the wheels.

Pool sweep wheels are not turning

Problems with the sweep hose on these pools cleaners usually just means that you need to do some fine tuning. Start by trying to adjust the sweep hose adjustment screw. To adjust, turn off the booster pump and turn the screw clockwise to decrease motion and counterclockwise to increase. You might also need to replace one or both of your swivel ball bearings (part #D20).

Here is copy of the users manual for these pool cleaners. It has a detailed diagram of all of the parts that is pretty easy to follow. Find the section that you need to change and you should be able to see how to access it. Hope that helps.

My wheels are not turning on my Polaris 280, what can I do?

When my polaris wheels stopped spinning it was the water jet which spins the turbine was clogged. The in-line filter had failed and some small debris had passed through to clog the jet. Easy fix to take off the top cover then take off the turbine cover and examine /clear the hose (clamped on by zip ties) and the plastic jet.

Polaris 280 - tank track keeps coming off

I battled with the track falling off for over a season. The pool guys said they fixed it. Tried the previous solution to adjust middle wheel but no luck. My solution was to remove the left wheel and the tank (to get to the screws). The wheel mount allows for minor adjustment but it is also reversible. Turn the mount around and this will extend the wheel base much more. Mine ran for several hours after doing this and so far the track stays on.
