SanDisk Sansa E280 MP3 Player

Computer doesn't recognize MP3 player - (by 39 users)

posted by Piccolina on Nov 14, 2007

I recently got a Sansa e280 mp3 player as a gift. I've tried to download songs to it by copying songs to my laptop, using Windows Media Player 11. I have made a sync file, but when I connect my mp3 player to my computer, using the cable that came with it nothing happens. The "Start Sync" button does not light, and as player is not recognized. I've hit the "refresh device" button, and the "device refreshed completion" flashes, but I still can't download my playlist to the player.

This Problem has been added to the Share Your Expertise Page under "My Work Queue".

HEADS UP, new option!

I spent a few days on this in utter frustration, tried everything anyone has suggested. My Sansa Clip 2GB was toggling back and forth between connected and disconnected. Drove me nuts and I ordered a new one and started sending flame to the person on bought this one from on eBay.

Turned out to be: THE USB CABLE!

The USB cable that shipped from Sandisk is bad, flaky connection. Turns out the previous owner ignored it because it's so short. Used another longer one. I switched to a new cable and the Clip works perfectly!

So if you are getting weird behavior, especially irratic or a change in behavior, swap out the USB cable.

For Sansa Clip, XP sp2, if it does not show up in my computer as a device, disconnect from pc, go into sansa menu to USB then press center. It's probably set to MDM. Scroll to MSC, press button. Reconnect to pc & it'll probably show up.

Set the USB mode to MSC under the Menu option of settings/USB Mode. Then reconnect the player using the cable and you may be able to transfer files with drop and drag under windows. This worked for xp home edition.

1. turn sansa clip on
2. slide to "hold"
3. press and hold center button do NOT let go...
4. plug in the connector cable
5. wait until computer recognises Sansa device
6. let go of center button
7. drag n drop files and you are all set.

I just got my Sansa clip to work! I tried getting windows to solve it, it was showing up in the hardware list as a Mass USB device, and when trying to fix it it said it was inaccessable or something.

First, update your firmware: http://www.sandisk.com/Retail/Default.aspx?CatID=1376

also, try connecting it in MTC mode. Slide the hold/power switch to hold, then press the center button while plugging it in to the USB port. This is what worked for me.

I tried for 2 days to find drivers (Windows XP) for my daughter's sansa clip and it's impossible. What I finally figured out is that you must install Windows Media Player 11, then plug in your sansa clip and it's plug and play from there! It brought up a screen that asked if I wanted to view the files or other random options. Click view files, then you can drag and drop your files over. Hope this works for you!

Check the Device Manager in Windows for errors while the device is connected.

If there are any errors, red or yellow indicators. Right Click on them and select un-install.

Then disconnect the device, wait a few seconds and reconnect it to your PC.

Allow the PC to re-install the drivers.

** if that doesnt work, add to the question and ill have more.

Best of Luck.

If you experience problems with this basic and critical functionality, just return the clip and buy a more stable product.

I just went thru the same problem with my new E280. I discovered it was a bad Sansa-to-computer USB cable. This unit just happened to accidentally ship with 2 of these cables (still sealed in their plastic bags) and the second cable worked fine. (the first cable found the trash really fast!!!)
Hope this helps... the cables seem to be bound with twist ties REALLY tight and may cause the wire inside to break!!!

Guys, as already mentioned, simply upgrade your version of windows media player to version 11, and all will be well. That's all it takes! Enjoy.

In my case it was the prior removal of an old version of Windows Media Player. I run a lean system with no frills and had removed Windows Media Player 8 or 9 or whatever came with XP, and I had not re-installed a later version as I prefer using the latest MediaMonkey. I reluctantly installed WMP 11 and my Sandisk e280 was recognized by the system again, even without any firmware or software from Sansa/Sandisk installed...you don't actually need it I (except to update) if you have a media player that can sync files.

I have a cheap mp3 player (Insignia Kix from Best Buy) that I initially had no trouble with; however, after I downloaded SP3 for XP Media Center Edition 2002, my computer no longer recognized when I had the player connected via USB port. (At least, I BELIEVE this is when the trouble started.) I tried downloading an MFT something or other (recommended by a Napster tech support person), but that didn't fix the problem, unfortunately.

I have a sansa clip 2gb. Has worked fine for 2 months. Now wndws media 11, mediamonkey, and creative player will not sync up with the mp3 player. It does not even acknowledge that it has been plugged in. I hear the USB sound when I plug into the unit. I have a pair of oakley thump 512mb. sun glasses and they sync W/no problem. Anybody know what the H---- has happened or is going on, and is there a fix for this?                       Thanks, Kim   bellalag@hughes.net

I have a very similar problem. I got the Sansa e280 player for Christmas and did not get a setup CD with it. My Windows Xp computer does not recognize the unit. I downloaded the converter software from the SanDisk website but it does not help.

Mr Munky seems to have solved the problem for me. How in the heck did he ferret it out? Sansnit was of NO help with this. I locked down the device just like he said and held the middle button down while plugging it in and poofs!!! It loaded the firmware thingy and even offered to go look for updates...which it never succeeded in doing. But anyway, the dang thing is recognized now. Now to see what other excitement it will throw my way. It's a rare thing to actually find a fix like this that works. Wow!
Bad Sansa! I never understood how a company could devise a highly technical and innovative product and then not know a thing about it! Good job there Mr. Munky! Much joy here.

Windows media player does not recognize my Sansa e280 MP3 player when set on USB mode MTP
If I change the Mode to MSC it recognizes it and I can transfer my music.
Then when trying to play some of my songs that I have down loaded from WalMart Downloads I receive the message from the the e280 "synchronize to continue your music subscription" then it proceeds to the next song it continues this until it seems to find one it is willing to play. All my music has been down loaded legally

I connected it to my PC, but it still won't register as a hardware on the computer. Also, when i tried to relight the screen by moving the wheel, it wouldn't. It also wouldn't turn back on. Only after a couple of tries did it, and only by hooking it back up. The device got very hot to the touch also.

I have a Sansa e280 and I haven't had any problems with until now. My computer won't recognise it. When I plug it in it comes up with USB device not recognised. I've tried plugging it in in both MTP and MSC mode. I've tried downloading the latest firmware. In the device manager there's no errors it just says Unknown device. I tried uninstalled that unknown device waiting then plugging it in. It then found new hardware but didn't install it properly and told me that it might not work. It was right. Now in the device manager it has a yellow error next to one so I uninstalled that. Waited a moment then plugged it back in. The same error in the device manager: code 10.
Please help!!
