1.Feed dogs will not operate and it binds a makes a racket when I try to widen the zig-zag stitch

When I try to make the stitches wider it starts to bind somewhere and make a progressively louder noise as I make the stitches wider. Also, the feed dogs will not operate.

Is it an older mechanical machine (as opposed to a computerized model)? If so, you may want to review the manual how to clean and oil your machine. Sounds like it has been setting for some time without lubrication.

Testimonial: "I took the machine back from the sewing machine repair shop 'cause they weanted 100 to fix the problem. When I got it home I took a flashlight and studied the machine and I adjusted a linkage on the dog operating shaft and now it stopped binding and runs like a top and sews beautifully. That's my first attempt at fixing any sewing machine but I have been blessed by being able to analyze mechanical stuff. Thank you God! Saved $100 and it only took me about 15 minutes of looking at it and then making the adjustment."

Change from a free-motion foot to a straight stitch or zig-zag foot. Raise the feed dogs. Adjust the width and length stitch selectors to your preference.

I have a Singer S18, stitches perfect. Attempted to use Zig Zag stich and decorative stitches, These are not working, It will make a few stitches then keeps stitching in place. Any Suggestions? Thanks

You probably need to widen the stitch width before it will let you sew. Or change the pressed foot to accommodate the movement of the needle when making decorative stitches.

The feed dogs on my sewing machine will not raise

if your question is that the fabric didn't feed when I tried a zig-zag stitch , well then this might be a normal thing to happen on your machine , some machines when set to MAX size zig-zag stitch retract the "feed dogs" as you call them so that the operator can hand move the fabric around under presser foot , this is task called "darn" and its usually for filling large holes in fabric (socks!!) and for adding embroidery too (special needle)

How to I adjust the feed dog when using the the zig zag feature?

1. The feed dog is adjusted by raising or lowering the length of stitches.
2. The other control that is of concern for zigzag stitches is the width control being raised or lowered.

then you go down the left side using a smaller zig zag stitch

then you make the smaller zig zag stitch on the right side
all the way to the top broad zig zag stitch & your done
the right side zig zag does not go beyond the top broad zig zag

My Janome Harmony 1017 won't sew all the zigzag stitches. Stitches 5,7 and 8 bog down after just two or three stitches because the fabric isn't moving through the machine. Any suggestions?

when the fabric does not move then the feed dogs under the needle plate need to be checked to see if there up or down.
if the feed dogs are down then the lever or switch needs to be pushed up into the correct position
if the feed dogs are up & they are not moving the fabric like there suppose to, cause it's there job to move the fabric against the presser foot,, then they need to be check

the gears that do the zig zag stitches should be checked to make sure there not worn & weather they might need be be greased

I cannot get my sewing machine stitch the different stitches. I've followed all the instructions in the manual and all I get are straight stitches. I want to get a zig zag. Sometimes it looks like it did...

When you select a pattern does the needle move back and forth? do you make sure the stitch width lever is on straight stitch then select your pattern then select the widest stitch width? if when you select a zig zag stitch the needle does not move from side to side then you need to look in the top at the finger that goes round the cam.
