THEIR ARE BASICALLY TWO TYPES OF CARRIERS ON CELL TOWER CARRIER A OR CARRIER B. EITHER ONE OF THEM OR BOTH COULD BE TRANSMITTING ZTE SERVICE.. SUGGEST CALLING YOUR CELL PHONE SERVICE PROVIDER AND SEE IF THEY CAN MAKE ADJUSTMENTS ON YOUR PHONE. NORMALLY #611 AND HIT SEND WILL DO.
IF YOU WANT TO TEMPORARY GET A STRONGER SIGNAL US A CHEAP PAIR OF EAR BUDS OR HEAD SET. EAR BUDS ARE AROUND A DOLLAR AT MOST DOLLAR STORES.

If there are updates you should get them from the manufacturer. But why should there be? or why should you update in the first place. If the device is acting strange, I advice not to update till the problem is solved. It could brick every device when updating with a not 100% functioning apparatus.
If you have problems, first try to sole the problem, even when the manufactures offers an update. Every update has lots of warnings, like don't do the update if the apart is not functioning well and lost of others.
Update is not a solution for an existing problem. It supposed to be a bug fix (bug fixes) if the manufacturer has got knowledge of them.

I believe its a 3G Device which does not have sim card, to activate you'll use the MEID.
