Check with your carrier or regulator.
You should not have any problems with land based transport - bus, train but may encounter problems if flying.

How do I check in baggage?

To an airport? You take it with you to the airport and there are two ways.

If you already have a printed boarding pass, you can go to a kiosk which will print your baggage tag after checking your boarding pass and passport.

Or, you go to a check in desk and do it the old fashioned way.

Check the airline site for information about baggage. The direct answer to your questions: 1) Depends on the airlines 2) Depends on the airlines.

Two sites that offer tables covering many airlines and baggage are below.

Can we take a large suitcase as well as hand luggage on domestic flights within Australia with Virgin Airlines?

https://www.virginamerica.com/cms/vx-fees#baggage
The following is in regards to oversized luggage which you will pay an extra fee for. It is NOT a reference to checked baggage which is NOT oversized.

Checked baggage cannot exceed 80 linear inches and any bag weighing more than 100lbs/45kg will not be accepted for check in at the airport.

European countries The EU rules apply if you are travelling from any airport within the EU, including the UK, and if you are travelling from Albania, Croatia, Iceland, India, Kenya, Kosovo, Norway, Pakistan, Russia, Serbia, Turkey, Switzerland and Ukraine, irrespective of your destination.
