My washer is off track the drum moves all around in the spin cycle

(a) Open wide the front loading door. Ensure the drum is totally empty

(b) Remove the top of the washing machine and check that the Damper springs either side of the drum are attached and not broken or loose. Push down on the top of the drum to ensure they are both in good working order!. If they are broken, replace them.

(c) put both hands inside, and hold the top of the drum and try to lift the drum in a 'up and downwards' motion.

(d) If there is any movement in the drum this means the drum bearings have worn or disintigrated and need replacing.

(e) Remove the back panel from the washing machine and you will see a large wheel affixed to the drum. The bearings are behind it.

(f) Should you wish to replace the bearings or springs yourself to save money, they can be purchased at trade price from espares tel: 0844 375 3375
by giving them the make and model number of your washing machine. They also sell at a very reasonable price 'How to' video's so thast you can do it yourself and save pounds.

Noisy bearing while spinning

The seal in the drum has failed allowing water to leak into the bearings causing them to rust. Once the bearings are no longer round, the bearing noise will get louder. To replace, the washer needs to be taken apart and the drum needs to be removed in order to replace the bearings. Can be a difficult and expensive repair. Get a few estimates before deciding whether it is worth reparing. Sorry.

Our front loading Kenmore MODEL 41742042100.has begun sounding like a jet enjine when it is spinning, someone told me that it is probably bad bearings, is it worth having this 7yr old machine repaired or...

Hi.

I

f you get a very loud noise coming from the machine, and this noise islouder when it spins faster, then it is often because of a problem with the drum bearing.

The drum bearing is bad, probably drum bearing spider had broken.

On a front load the drum bearing is located at the back of the drum.

To replace the part you take apart machine, undo the belt and depending on the model you may need to remove more parts.

You can find parts and diagrams for most models here.

Sounds like a Harley when it spins, still spins though.

Drum Bearing Replacement

With a plastic tub (outer drum as you describe it) removal of the old bearings can deform or bruise out the plastic housing a little - you will need to check that the new bearings will be really good fit. You may need to use a retaining compound if not, to ensure that the outer journals of the bearings don't creeping round in the plastic housing and wear it looser.
I did my Hoover Electron 800 bearings (metal tub). As i recall it was fairly straightforward - needed a gasket for the tub backplate on that.
Unbolted tub backplate from tub and withdrew it through rear of chassis along with drum/drum-shaft/bearings assembly, removed pulley, tapped shaft through bearings with softfaced mallet (or hammer & wood), drifted bearings out gently, working evenly around circumference.
For plastic tub some kind of suitable extractor may reduce chances of deforming bearing housing during bearing removal, compared to drifting them out. If it'd serve to ease the new ones in too then that'd be even better.
Don't forget to check/clean the water level pressure sensor path while you're at it - stave off any problems in that area for a while while you have the machine apart. ;o)

Drum wont turn

Sounds to me like the rear bearing is seized up. Seeing how you describe its been noisy for ages I would say the porblem is the bearing. Its not a easy jub to replace for a novice. The entire tub must be removed and taken apart to replace the rear bearing. To take the case apart its only the front panel with the door that that will come off. there should be a wire with a spring that holds the bellows to the door. remove that and the rest should come apart from the inside. Dont forget to disconect the dor switch.
