Question about Gateway Computers & Internet

It is possible that there is something sticky keeping the "e" key form working. Removing the key and cleaning around it carefully with alcohol or alcohol water 50/50 or 100% mix might free it up. Use Que-tips or something like that. try to clean around it first. If that does not work try gently lifting up on the key with a small screw driver or knife. You may hear a small pop. this could go either way for you good or bad, so be car full. then try cleaning around the spot ware the key was, gently replace the key.
You may also consider plugging in a cheep $10.00 key board and see if this works. I spilled a large drink in min and needed to use an auxiliary key board until I replaced the computer.

SOURCE: laptop keyboard not working
Random keys or a row of keys not working indicates that the keyboard is failing and needs replacing. Before replacing, you might try taking the keyboard off and cleaning the connection. A little dirt or corrosion built up might cause this, but most likely the keyboard has malfunctioned.

There is one thing you can try. Uninstall the drivers for the keyboard from the device manager, then reboot. The machine will find the keyboard and reinstall the drivers automatically. If this doesn't work, then I'm afraid the Shift key function has failed and the keyboard will need replaced in order to fix it.

You MAY have to reboot for the changes to take effect.
