Thank you it wasn't the batteries but the ground wire that had broke off. Although we now have dash lights we cannot get the tractor to turn over unleas we ground out the solenoid.

Well, Kathy, if the tractor has been sitting for a few months, like over the winter, chances are the battery has lost a bit of its charge. A general rule of thumb is a dormant battery will lose approximately 1/2 volt each month its sitting in a non-running vehicle or without a "float" charger.

However, the first thing I'd do would be to remove the battery terminals and thoroughly clean inside the cable ends as well as the actual battery posts themselves. There seems to be a tendency for those old terminals to corrode up a bit and inhibit the current flow.

Be very careful NOT TO GROUND out your wrench on the frame of the tractor or the gas tank as you are removing or re-installing the battery because you could cause a direct short to ground with your wrench and make you really jump out of your skin !!!! Follow the cables and find the one that grounds to the frame and remove that one first then the other one and that will minimize the chance of grounding out the wrench. Then reinstall that one last.

If after cleaning the terminals AND the cable ends there is still a problem, consider having someone charge your battery fully and try it again. You should at least get something to happen with a fully charged battery and clean terminals though. If not, post back the results and let us know what did and what did not happen and we can walk you through the next phase.

Turn the key and nothing....

the small wire at the starter may be corroded and not offering a good contact. With a helper turning the key check for power at the small wire at the starter. if there is power with the key in the crank position and the connection looks clean that the starter is likely bad.

Will not turn over

If the lights work but no crank, it could be the security system or the neutral safety switch among other things.
Is the security light on or flashing ? Do the warning lights come on when you turn the key on ? Did you try cranking it in neutral ?

Hyundai accent 2002 turn key nothing happens?

If you turn your key and get no response its scary I am sure. I need to know a few things to get a better idea on what is happening. 1) Are your connections loose on your battery terminals? 2) Did it have any warning or did it just give zero responce one day?

Vw jetta glx vr6 key turns in ignition, but nothing happens

The first thing I would check is the starter motor fuse and relay, but the lights staying on is weird. Perhaps the ignition key switch is defective. That could be caused by many things including wear and tear / moisture / insects, especially if the car is old and you are living in a warm and humid climate.

Battery is good, no lights, no nothing when key is

May be ignition switch and/or neutral safety switch (IF equipped with one). Brake light switch and neutral switch may be working in union. Sww if you can see it under the wheel on the column and tell if you can adjust it first before replacing.
