Don't touch the bar while its running but does bar get real hot and smoke roll off bar when this occurs ?

could be your auto oiler has clogged up and not oiling your bar/chain , this can be easy checked by looking in your oil reservoir to see if any oil pumped out after a few minutes use

If the saw bogs down when this occurs, you may be exerting too much down pressure on the saw. If it doesn't bog down but stays at full throttle rpm, your centrifugal clutch could be the culprit. It essentially has fly weights held in place by a tight spring. Centrifugal force of the rotating crankshaft throws the fly weights out to engage the clutch drum to initiate rotation of the sprocket.

Cheap homeowner saw centrifugal clutches are usually available for less than twenty bucks.

Stihl pole saw model HT75--Was cutting a limb and the chain stopped cutting--What is the problem?

Could be a few things.

1. Clutch slipping at engine end.
2. Drive shafts have become detached from drive or broken.
3. Clutch behind the drive sprocket on the cutting head may need tightening.
4. Chain too sharp/aggressive and is trying to cut too much and the stopping the chain.
5. Chain too tight.

What would cause a new chain saw not to cut

Maybe I'm reading this wrong, but it sounds like you are saying your chainsaw is newer and runs fine, but it just isn't cutting wood well?

If that is the case then it means the chain wasn't sharpened correctly. Lots of guys do it at home and don't file down the raker teeth in front of the cutter heads, so the teeth don't grab into the wood and just nibble at the wood and make fine sawdust. It is always best to get the chain sharpened at a saw shop first so you can get an idea of the correct angles and depth of the rakers etc. After that you can try to match the saw shop for a while with a round file to take off ragged edges unless you have a decent professional saw sharpening unit.

When sharpening the chain saw chain what is the filing angle?

same as the angle of the chain. It is recommended you use your round file that accommodates the size of the tooth of the chain. count the cuts or motions (each tooth should be filed the same amount) if you cut the first tooth three times cut the balance three times. keep the exact angle of the tooth and do not deviate or the chain will not cut as well. if you over file and change the angle for the chain you are filing you may need to have a professional fix it or buy a new chain. the flat file is simply a light stroke to remove misc fragments off the top of the tooth or give it a sharper edge after the round filing is complete. when using a round file it is easiest to purchase a small holder so each stroke is stable and straight. good luck.

What size file to sharpen rcs1835 chain

For a standard 3/8 inch chain pitch you would use an 11/64 round file.
There are standard cut files and smooth cut files.

A standard cut file offers the fastest removal rate per stroke and is the most widely preferred chainsaw file. The aggressive tooth pattern of the file yields maximum performance in a minimal amount of time.

a smooth cut file is recommended for those who maintain there chain on a very frequent basis. It removes less metal per stroke, which will extend the life of the chain. Because it's a finer cut file, a skilled user can achieve a sharper tooth.

You will also need a flat depth gauge file. A depth gauge file is a flat file with two round uncut edges. This allows for the correct adjustment of depth gauges, prevents gouging and preserves saw chain life.

Good luck with your saw.

AKE 35-19 Pro Bosch chainsaw used copule of yime worked fine this time isnt cutting chain and blades going round and tension seems to be about right

Has the chain and bar been removed-- if so, make sure the teeth are cutting toward you on the bottom run of chain. Also, make sure the chain is properly sharpened. Hope this helps!

Ryobi 14 inch electric chainsaw won't cut with new chain

Hi Rossmac,

Both the smoke and it's lack of cutting ability are symptoms of the same problem. The Chain is dulled. Instead of cutting, it's just rubbing on the wood and heating up. It's also not a big deal to fix..

Your options are:
  • Replace the Chain
  • Have the Chain sharpened
  • Sharpen it yourself
To sharpen it yourself, you will need a narrow round file that will fit inside the Chain teeth. Each tooth has a two cutting edges, get the file a position that matches the tooths angle of attack. Don't over do, three to five swipes of the file should do it on each surface.

You will see they alternate directions. You may find it easier to do all the teeth in one direction (skipping every other tooth) then do the other direction. Up to you.

When you are done, check the level of your chain oil. Since it did get hot, you might manually oil the chain before trying out your handi-work.

Go cut some wood.
