My new external drive works fine on my laptop but the desktop comes up with a message: 'please insert a disk into drive f' Both computers are running windows vista. Any ideas?
On the computer that is not working, goto:
Right click on My Computer > Click Manage < scroll to Device Manager, then Expland Universal Serial Bus Controllers, then Right Click USB Mass Storage Device and click Uninstall. You will then need to right click on Universal Serial Bus Controllers and Scan for Changes. Plug in the USB drive and it should show up.

Yes it is the right letter and yes it comes up with the same icon as you would get with a SD card or similar. the drive letter is just the next drive letter after the built-in drives.
Are you sure you are using the right drive letter? It sounds more like a response you would get by addressing an empty card reader slot.
