So now you have to check the wires. The reason there is a polarized plug is to prevent the hot wire from being sent to ground. Obviously when you changed the plug, the hot wire was sent to ground. The current draw then burned a wire in half. There is no fuse.

wires are fine, replaced the plug now with a polarized one, does the rating on the plug need to be rated to a specific level?

  • Anonymous Apr 12, 2015

asking this as the vacuumm still does not come on - no evidence of the motor or board being burnt out wires

I am not sure where you are located. Most plugs in the USA are rated for 15 amps. You are going to have to get a meter and use it to check the wire on the cord

The rainbow sat for too long on the water now wont run

So depending on how long, you may have rusted out the bearings in your motor, especially if it sat so long as to eat the glue off of your gasket.
Sounds like you may need a new motor, gasket, baffle plate and separator.

I smelled something burning one day , but i kept using my d4c, now the motor part does not run but the top plug in will run

I work on Rainbows. D4C-E2 etc. Not sure what you mean by the top plug in. There are two motors in the rainbow, one in the main unit, one in the power head. Where was the odor coming from? email me back with more info, I can help you with this. Jerry

Rainbow E-series will not turn on

Hi, there is no reset button on a Rainbow vacuum. There is a safety switch on all E series and E2 series Rainbow vacuums, that keep it from running without the water basin on it.

If you have any more questions let me know. I am a Rainbow seller, and a Rainbow expert also. Thank you, Ralph
One other thing. All E series vacuums have a built in circuit breaker on the motor. Some of the earlier ones, it was only a fuse, and if it blew, it had to be replaced, or removed and wired directly without it on there. Most of them have a automatic reseting curcuit breaker, that will blow and auto reset its self, after it cools off. They do sometimes stay blown also, and do not reset. If that is the case, it has to also be replaced, or removed, and wired directly, with out it on there.

Motor brushes are usually the source of a non working E-2 vacuums and when they burn out, they usually take the motor armature with them, from excessive heat and flare electrical arking to the armature.

Thank you again,
Ralph

Hi, there is no reset button on a Rainbow vacuum.

All SE series vacuums have a built in thermal and load fuse on the motor, and if it blew, it has to be replaced, or wired directly, with out it on there.
Motor brushes are usually the source of a non working Rainbow D4 and SE and all model Rainbow vacuums and when they burn out, they usually take the motor armature with them, from excessive heat and flare electrical arking to the armature. It is probably the thermal and load fuse, that is your problem, if you did not smell any electric burning type of smell, before it quit. It could be the power switch, but not as likely as the fuse. Rainbow Vacuum smells like something is burning.

Your belt is worn and that is why there is a burnt rubber smell. You need to change your belt. You can find a replacement belt and instructions here:

Vacuum plugged in but not on, smoke started coming from the motor

The motor winding burned out. Perhaps the motor was very hot when the vac was turned off after the last use and the insulation of the motor windings broke down when the air stopped moving thought the unit. Perhaps also the polarity of the receptacle it was plugged into is reversed or the plug on the vacuum is not polarized. Those things in combination could cause this but this is kind of a long shot guess. In any case the blower motor is likely burned out and will need to be replaced and checked out.

Burning Smell

Check the carbon motor brushes, there might be arcing on the armature. New brushes may help if the armature is ok.
