My 3 month old flat grill shows evidence of Teflon coating flaking off the top and bottom surfaces. What can I do to repair these surfaces?

There is nothing that you can do to replace the coating when it starts to come off. Not real nice to think about eating it either. You can remove it all with a wire brush or you can toss the item in the trash and replace it.

If the material seems to disintegrate then it can be due to reactions from detergents or water. If so you need to replace the grill

Is it wise to wash the grates with soap and water or does this remove the seasoning and create a need to reseason? Should the grates be washed?

Hi gscollinssr...
Never wash the grill grates with soap and water...your right it will remove the seasoning and have to be reseasoned again..Clean with a wire brush and wipe with a dry paper towel to clean your grates for the next time you cook.

How to clean rust off the plates of my grill

You will need either a grill brick or a sturdy metal brush. Brush off the flaking rust . There may still be some rusty discoloration but the FLAKY stuff is what you want to remove. Then you need to "season" the grill.
Do this by pouring a small amount of vegetable (corn, safflower, canola, etc) oil on a paper towel and wipe the grill with that. Make sure you hit ALL surface areas. Then turn the grill on and let it run until the grill ssurface turns black...there will be a LOT of smoke. Once the grill is black, turn off the heat, your grill is seasoned and you're done. I season my indoor grills after each use. This will prevent further rust.
I hope this helps. If it does, please come back to Fixya and rate my advice!

Hi, the flakes you're referring to is the original weatherproofing that was applied by the manufacturer. This coating can be reapplied using a spray on product that is purchased at most camping outfitters. Before you spray, give the cover a gentle wash to clear any dirt and grime. Then using a mild abrasive pad, gently lift away the flaking weatherproofing. Spray the new coating as per product instructions.

Can nonstick surface be replaced, how and what

I wouldn't suggest spray on Teflon - even if it can withstand high temperatures, in prolonged use the Teflon Spray you can buy isn't really supposed to be used for food prep. If the grill still works okay then keep the grill; prices of George Foreman grills have fallen due to Russell Hobbs who have brought out larger grills for the same cost.

Teflon finish is bubbling

unfortunately this is a common problem among these grills, your only option is to replace it unless you have an extended warranty... if you want to keep using it, you can use a scotchbrite or similar metal pad to get rid of most of the teflon coating. if you want to replace it because you love electric grilling and don't much like teflon flakes in your food, i would recommend that your next grill have stainless steel or cast iron grilling surfaces..

hope this helps,
