Blades would not turn after I got stuck in mud. Electric clutch?

  • Turn the engine off and remove the key.
  • Check for physical damage; anything look bent?
  • Spin the pulley on the bottom of the clutch. Does it spin freely?
  • There could be mud or grit stuck in the clutch.
  • There is a drive key between the clutch and the shaft. Has this key been sheared? It's possible the clutch was burnt out during the mud incidence.
PTO Clutch will not engage or stay engaged.
There is a very fine discussion on evaluating electric clutches at this site:
http://www.messicks.com/Articles/FixingElectricClutch.aspx

My JD tech manual, which covers the entire LA 100 series, agrees with the electrical specifications. It states that the Electric PTO Clutch should show the following:
  • Resistance 3.7 ohms
  • Current Draw 3.25 amps.
  • It does not give the air gap.
It does include a note to check the PTO Clutch Key for damage or if missing. So there is a drive key between the PTO Clutch and the shaft. Additionally, it recommends checking the tightness of the cap screw. That's the screw or bolt that holds the clutch on the shaft.
  • Cap Screw torque 55 lb-ft (75 N.m).

SOURCE: broken belt

This is actually pretty simple:

Remove Pto guard on mower deck

Stand mower up on back stands

Pull the friction disc away from the drive disc

slip new belt in between the friction disc and drive disc pushing all the way through

release friction disc allowing to come back in contact with drive disc

loop belt around engine pulley

let mower back down

route belt around mower pulley

loosen guides on idler pulley

route belt through idler pulley

with engine off move pto lever to tighten mower belt

adjust guides on idler pulley allowing 1/8" from belt

tighten bolt on idler pulley

release pto tension

install mower pto guard

and you should be ready to mow

SOURCE: Snapper Zero Turn mower. Blade will not engage. Any suggestions?

I am not sure what type of blade engagement mechanism you have (ex. clutch, tensioner/idler pulley, etc...) but make sure that the blades can spin freely with the belt taken off of their pulleys. It could very well be that one of the pulley bearings is seized.

I have an LT series Snapper rider with 20 hp and 44" cut. The transmission seems to be slipping. I have not checked the oil. Replacing the belt looks like a big job.

Not as some John Deere mowers I worked on lately.

I am assuming your is the Hydro version with electric pto. First set the parking brake as this remove tension on the belt.

You will need to remove the pto clutch and attention to the keys are positioned as they are one way keys. When reinstalling the PTO clutch it torqued to 55 ft lbs. To do this you need to remove the engine shroud so can block the flywheel movement.

The rest of the belt removal and replacement is fairly straight forward.

Blades won't engage after got stuck in mud electronic pull on blade engagement

Blades would not turn after I got stuck in mud. Electric clutch.

  • Turn the engine off and remove the key.
  • Check for physical damage; anything look bent?
  • Is the deck belt intact?
  • Spin the pulley on the bottom of the clutch. Does it spin freely?
  • There could be mud or grit stuck in the clutch.
  • There is a drive key between the clutch and the shaft. Has this key been sheared?
  • When you pull the PTO switch does the clutch make a "click"? It's possible the clutch was burnt out during the mud incidence.

Grease plug locatiom snapper rider

if it's a rear engine rider with a 28 or 30 inch deck the grease fitting is underneath the deck... If it is a rear engine rider, close the fuel off and stand the mower on end but for a short period of time only. This applies to ALL rear engine riders from Snapper up until about 2 years ago when they made a SERIOUS mistake and redesigned them
