You probably damaged the ink cartridge carrier when you replaced the cartridge the first time.

SOURCE: My printer is not printing the colour yellow even though the cartidge is full and new

If you have run the nozzle cleaning utility, and you are not getting any yellow output, the cartridge is most likely defective. This also occurs if you are not using OEM ink cartridges.

SOURCE: red streaks

That machine needs constant cleaning, you slide out the toner drawer and one at a time remove each toner, open the frosted plastic flap below and slide the wiper back and forth about 10 times to clean the corona. You could also have a bad magenta cartridge which Brother will replace for 90 days from date of purchase.

How do I remove and replace the ink absorber pad/tank on my Brother MFC - J220

The ink absorber tank is buried deep within the machine, and in Brother's terms a "non user replaceable item".

If you fancy a challenge, you need to remove the upper cover of the machine and the tank is located on the right hand side, just in fornt of the ink cartridge unit. If your machine has a document feeder, this needs to be removed first by lifting the little "hatches" that hide the wires to/from the reader, and disconnecting the wires. Once the hatch on the left hand side has been lifted, this ,also allows the support strut to be unclipped. The doc feeder can then be hinged right back at which point it can be lifted off its hinges.

Brother state that the hoses which connect to the maintance unit (the clever bit that does all the head cleaning business) to the tank "must" be replaced as well. In my expereince, so long as you're careful when removeing them from the old tank and connecting them to the new one, they don't leak.

I don't bother replacing the tank - I pull out the ink-soaked padding (carefully as it drips everywhere) and then put some sponge or thick paper towel in instead. Make sure you put tape over the hole once you're finished in case ink spashes out.

How to change an ink cartridge on the Brother MFC-240C

The Brother MFC-240C uses an individual cartridge for each color (black, yellow, cyan, and magenta). When one of the colors is out of ink, the printer will tell you to replace the ink cartridge. To replace a cartridge, follow the steps below.

All four cartridges are located on the right front side of the printer, behind a cover. Pull the cover forward from the side, where there is a slight cutout for you to grab. When the cover falls forward, you'll see the ink cartridge holders.

For whichever ink cartridge you are replacing, push down on the purple handle for that color. The ink cartridge holder will open and fall forward, revealing the ink cartridge itself. Push down on the cartridge holder and the cartridge should pop toward you a little bit. Grasp the cartridge and remove it.

Open the new cartridge and remove it from its wrapper. Discard the yellow cover, unless you plan to use it for the old cartridge.

Insert the new cartridge into the correct slot (from left to right: black, yellow, cyan, magenta) so that the word "brother" is right-side up and located toward the top of the cartridge. Once it is most of the way in, push the ink cartridge holder up by the purple handle until it snaps into place. Then close the ink cartridge cover.

If you were out of ink, the machine should recognize the new cartridge and perform its calibration. If it doesn't automatically recognize it, it will ask if you have changed one or more of the cartridges. Press "1" for Yes.

Once you have printed a test page with all four colors to verify that everything is working, either discard the old cartridge in the trash or save it to recycle. But don't get rid of it until you are sure the new cartridge is recognized and working.

I have replaced all cartridges-Black, yellow, blue, cyan ; however, print message indicates replace yellow.

The head of the printer may be defective that's why the cartridge is not detected by the printer.

I want to install ink cartidges and do not know where to begin. I have misplaced my instructions

To install your Brother machine#s ink cartridges, follow the steps
listed below:

1. Make sure that the Brother machine#s power is turned on.

2. Open the ink cartridge cover. This cover is located on right-hand
side of the Brother machine#s front panel.

3. Pull down the four lock release levers. There is one lock release
lever for each ink cartridge.

4. Take the ink cartridge out of its protective bag.

5. Carefully remove the yellow protective cap from the ink cartridge.

- DO NOT touch the side of the ink cartridge covered by the yellow
protective cap.

- Take care when removing this cover to prevent spilling ink and
staining your hands and clothing.

- If the cartridge cover comes off when you open the bag, the cartridge
will NOT be damaged.

6. Install each ink cartridge in the direction of the arrow on the
label.

- Please note that each color has its own specific position. These
positions are indicated by the colors of the four lock release levers.
Do not install an ink cartridge in the incorrect position, as this can
cause print quality problems.

7. Lift each lock release lever and push it until it clicks into the
closed position.

8. Close the ink cartridge cover.

- If the LCD shows #Install Black,# #Install Cyan,# #Install Magenta,#
or #Install Yellow# after you install the ink cartridges, please verify
that you have installed the cartridges correctly.

NOTE:

* DO NOT remove the ink cartridges from the Brother machine unless you intend to replace them. If you do, it may reduce the quantity of ink left in the cartridge, which may cause the Brother machine to miscalculate the amount of remaining ink.

* DO NOT shake the ink cartridges. If ink stains your skin or clothing, wash the affected area with soap or detergent immediately.

* DO NOT repeatedly insert and remove the ink cartridges. Doing so may cause ink to seep out of your cartridges.

* If you mix the colors by installing an ink cartridge in the wrong
position, clean the print head several times after correcting the
cartridge installation.

* Once you open an ink cartridge, install it in the Brother machine and use it up within six months of installation.

* Use unopened ink cartridges by the expiration date listed on the
cartridge package.

* DO NOT dismantle or tamper with the ink cartridge. Doing so can cause ink to leak out of the cartridge

MFC-420CN does not print black

My yellow cartridge was doing the same thing as your black. So I took the cartridge out, and took a flashlight to see how it works. There is like a little straw on the right hand side which goes up into the printer cartridge, this I assume is to measure the ink. I took a needle and cleaned that 'straw' thoroughly. Reseated the ink, ran cleaning and test print, and then the printer found the yellow ink! You could give that a try. It might work for you too. (I have never used any ink but Brother ink in the printer, btw.)
