Likely there is a reset period for an internal safety. If you can open it up you will find either something obviously burnt or it's probably O.K. A "diode" only lets power go one way. If reversed it shouldn't fail. More likely fried resistors. Too small to see if they're inside a chip, but easy to see if soldered on a circuit board. The color of the stripes on the resistor indicate it's exact type.

I hooked the battery cables up backwards and it blew the magneto hooked the cables back the right way and it blew the magneto again the model#21R707-0011 10.5hp 344c

This doesn't sound like a car, but more like a riding mower or something.

Anyway, is it the magneto that "blew" or a fuse for the magneto? You don't mention that you replaced the magneto....

Some manufacturers incorporate reverse protection diodes that are supposed to cause a fuse to blow if the battery is hooked up backward. Unfortunately, the diode often becomes a short circuit when this happens and would explain why a primary fuse would blow again, even when the battery is hooked up correctly. If you have a wiring diagram for what you're working on, I'd suggest checking for a diode connected near the battery cables. If you don't have a wiring diagram for this, you're probably going to need one.

What happens when you hook a care battery up backwards?

Hello Glen, Bad bad things can happen when you hook up a car battery backwards. If your car has a high quality electrical system it might only blow out one or two main fuses. If not, it can cause havoc on the wiring system and burn out the alternator, computer, sensors, modules, and stereo system to name a few.

Hooked up my connex 3300hp backwards

this usually just blows the fuse, check/replace and try again, if it pops the fuse, the protection diode has shorted and the radio needs to be serviced

Put battery in backwards

can be grave, some electronics blow up , backwards.
so, find an object that is dead. my guess, is the EFI is dead. huh?
so do you have 12vdc to all ECU power pins, or not , keyon.
if not you blew a fuse or fuse link. trace the path of lost power....
many ECU's have a diode inside protecting them from reversals.
not all do. 89 is like the dark ages in ECU. (first gen)

What size inline fuse is in the cobra 29 wt nw

Usually a 3 amp quick acting 3AG fuse---do not use the generic ones from Radio Shack.

If the radio got hooked up backwards look and test for a dead short across the power leads-----there is a diode just inside where the hot lead goes that will be shorted .

447 will not take power from power suply

  • If you have an inline fuse make sure to check and replace it if needed. If the radio was hooked up backwards then you need to go to radio shack and pick up a replacement diode. 1N4001 will be the diode you need. It allows current to travel one way but not the other. When you hooked the radio up backward it blew, like a fuse. Here is the diode at Radio Shack. http://www.radioshack.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2036268

  • When you pull the bottom cover off you will see this diode in the board right by the power cord connector for the radio. Most of the time they will be chipped or even split after blowing from reverse polarity. Pay attention to the little "arrow" on the diode because there is a negative and a passive to diode. Anode and Cathode as it were. The Anode flows to the Cathode. The "tip" of the arrow is the negative side.

  • Look with a flashlight to insure you did not blow a tracer too.

  • Hope this helps.

I have a trc447cb radio, it kept blowing fuses, please help thanks...

This radio has been hooked up backwards. CB radios cannot be hooked up backwards or it will destroy it. However this is hope.

Because they can be damaged this way, there are polarity protection diodes in the radio that will blow if the radio is hooked up backwards, before it can hurt anything in the radio.

They are usually N1004 diodes. Is a big black diode that has a white stripe. And if it is blown, it will most likely be Black and burnt.

Open the radio, and look near the power section of the radio. It will be in the back near where the power cord plugs into it.

Look for a burnt black diode. That is the protection diode.

Get an N1004 or better from radio shack, and remove the burnt one, and put the new one in, making sure to put it in with the white strip on the same side as the original.

Once you have finished. Make sure the polarity is correct. Then hook up the radio, and turn it on. Should work fine.

If you want to validate that it is the correct diode, if you pull on leg out of the board, and turn on the radio, it will turn on. When the diode blows, it prevent the power from getting to the board, if you take it out, it will let it through. CAUTION. The radio will work again if you just remove the burn diode without replacing it. But if you hook it backwards again, it will be toast, and as good a door stop.

Have cobra 29 nw ltd keeps blowing fuses inline and in cigarette lighter adapter adapter is 10 amps and inline is no more than 5 amps

This is an easy fix if you are comfortable soldering.

You must have hooked it up backwards. Big problem when using a cigarette lighter adapter. You have to be careful, if you hook a radio up backwards you blow the polarity protection diode.

  • Go to radio shack and buy an N1004 diode.
  • Open the radio
  • Look towards the back right of the radio for a black diode D23. it will probably look burnt, but not always.
  • Use a soldering wick to remove the solder holding the diode in.
  • Remove it, and replace the diode making sure its going in the same direction as the old on. Strip on the side the triangle is pointing.
  • Solder it in.
  • Test the radio
That should do it.

Make sure you are careful to hook the radio up to power corrctly.

Power outage

this radio takes a 7 amp fuse in the fuse holder if it blows the fuse the most likely the radio has blown the protection diode at the power plug on the positive side this usually happens when the radio is hooked up backwards.
