For awhile? How long? And then it slips again? I think you need a new clutch, your clutch disc must be worn. A new clutch kit includes a new clutch disc or plate, a new or rebuilt clutch pressure plate, and a new release bearing. Costs about $150-200,for the kit, but you also need the flywheel surface smoothed at a machine shop or garage, then the labor cost of removing the transmission or transaxle to replace the clutch- it all adds up to an expensive job.

SOURCE: 96 dodge caravan wont shift out of low gear. It

i agree with kirkx about things to check .. maybe this added suggestion will not be needed but that transmission has a special "limp along" feature .. that is, if it detects something wrong then the "limp along" mode is involked .. thats intended only to allow you to get to a service shop .. it may limit what gears you can use and can even lock up the torque converter .. you can still drive but it will lurch when you put it in gear and it may not shift ... its not unusual for the transmission to go in and out of the "limp along" mode for awhile until even more damage is done which locks it in that mode or until it quits completely .. lets hope you are just low on fluid ... make absolutely sure you use the correct fluid .. this tranny has a cooling problem (due to very low internal spacing) and needs a special thin oil to keep it from overheating .. you might consider having the tranny flushed ... they force a cleaning fluid thru it to wash out scale and deposits .. about $100 .. that wont help if its already damaged but worth a try since a new tranny costs about what the 96 is worth .... i love my 96 .. wish it would last forever .. the tranny repair shop tells me to expect from 75,000 to 150,000 lifetime .. but i have seen several with 200,000 or more miles .. maybe thats just luck ..

SOURCE: push on clutch and caR WONT GO IN GEAR UNLESS MOTOR OFF

This sounds like the clutch cable has broken. Not that it couldn't be the diaphram on the pressure plate, but the cable is more than likely the problem.

It won't go into gear while running because the clutch isn't being depressed putting the transmission in a position to allow the synchronizers to work.

When you turn it off, you can easily shift into any gear, but trying to start in gear makes the car try to move. You can verify this by putting it into high gear and trying to start it, you'll still move but less due to clutch slippage. If you put it into reverse, it will try to go backwards-so don't do that!

good luck!

Clutch problem on my 2011 astra

you forgot to say MANUAL transmission????????
and step #1 on all M/T box clutch pedal fails (say pedal see?
is the fluid for THE MC to slave cylinder is dry.
check fluid under hood for cutch MC, master cylinder above
the CLUTCH PEDAL it is.
if dry or very low, and goes lower the MC or SLAVE is bad.
i replace them both for faster longer service life./
the clutch bad can be variable until all fluid is lost
one key clue,is
is can not start the engine unless in Neutral.
or can not shift to 1st gear to move car. ,from neutral engine running
or all gears grind as you shift.
or the canary gear REVERSE loves to grind first is early warning of clutch failures.

a new MC and slave is cheap, do not buy a new transmission until MC and slave are proven good. first.

Why wont my car accelerate?

If you have an overdrive transmission the direct drive clutch may not be releasing. Have the trouble codes read to see if the computer or a sensor is starting to fail.

you are labouring the engine too much for the engine power ,you must keep teh RPM up it is a diesel and they will not develop power like a petrol engine at low RPM ,always pull away in first gear anyway or you will burn the clutch out in no time

2000 sc1 saturn trouble shifting manual transmissioninto all gears, it will not go in right away but it shifts into gear the second push. In the drive way it shifts into all gears just fine.

If your able to shift with the car off sitting in your driveway but not able to shift once the engine is running then you have one of several possible problems.

Problem 1) Possible clutch hydraulics problem where the hydraulics are not completely disengaging the clutch.

Problem 2) Clutch pressure plate fingers could be tired and not allowing the pressure plate to disengage the friction disc off the flywheel.

Problem 3) Not likely but depending on the abuse of the car, the synchros could be shot.

If the car has a decent amount of miles on it and is driven in the city a lot then Problem 1 and 2 are most likely the problem. So either way it's time to check some hydraulics or replace the clutch.

5th gear with 1996 VW Polo

hi mandy
im dave
if it only revs when you put it in 5th gear then it is not in fifth gear. it may look like it but it is not. try moving the gear selector from fourth into neutral releasing the clutch fully then applying the clutch and initiating fifth gear. if that does not work try placing it into one of the other gears first without releasing the clutch and then selecting fifth.
you should be fine driving in four gears as long as you dont travel on the audobahn or at speeds like your on the audobahn. Just watch your redline. try not to go past it. i think it is actually better for your car to drive at higher revolutions than lower as it cleans out your combustion chamber of carbon. on the other hand it is ******* your engine to drive in the red line constantly.
but 3000 rpm in 4th gear probably has you driving 130km/hr (82mph) which should be sufficient and your redline probably does not start until somewhere between 4-5k
