You have to hold the button down in the pilot position to allow gas to go to the pilot while you click the igniter. Hold the button down for a minute or two to allow the thermocouple to heat up, then turn the knob on the gas valve to the normal position. It should work providing that the pilot is capable of remaining lit. If not, then it could have a defective thermocouple or gas valve (aquastat).

The obvious may be slapping you around, replace the unit and rid yourself of migraine # 17. Consider price of new heater vs. ignitor unit.~~~>2nd thought, many states mandate a licensed contractor to replace this unit. Indiana has Gas Co. do it. So you've done your homework pwr in pwr out you've gone as far as you can. make that call.......

Have a new richmond water heater.there was no hotwater.i checked the water heater pilot was not lit.i relight it, it lite.turn to temp settings pilot went out.relit it againmade a explosion bom sound

the explosion was from a build up of gas that was not properly ignited by the pilot light or was leaking into the combustion box when there was no pilot light
there is a serious problem in the gas control system that needs urgent professional assistance to fix
you were lucky as it could have blown you out of the room
get in an experienced gas fitter as it is not a diy job

On A.O. Smith water heater model BTH 199 100 where is the heat sensor rod located ?

Parts list:
http://www.hotwater.com/lit/partslists/197728-004.pdf
Flame rod, flame sensor sits next to igniter inside combustion chamber. This can be cleaned with sandpaper. Do not touch with fingers. Purpose of flame rod is to detect whether ignition has caused actual, sustainable fire inside the combustion chamber.
If sensor is bad, or no ignition is detected after 2-3 attempts, then 'no ignition' error is given.
Bad gas control valve, bad-or-dirty flame rod-sensor, low gas pressure, misaligned rod, dirty combustion parts, etc

Thank you for providing clear description of product:
Your water heater has intellivent gas control thermostat.
There are always problems with water heaters. It is a huge field.

1) Open following link for AO Smith service manuals.
I do not see service manual specifically for the GP series.
http://www.hotwater.com/resources/product-literature/service-handbooks/

2) Open following link to identify gas valve and download typical service manual:
Some AO smith power vent models have intellivent gas valve, and some have smart valve gas vent. Older models might have knob-type gas valve.

I have a 1992 bounder mh ,6a6e atwood water heater.I recently replaced the coach batteries and main battery. My circuit board went bad, replaced along with eco and thermostat. My gas valve was rusty and...

First check thermal cut-off that is connected between incoming power wire and thermostat terminal. (located inside little clear plastic sleeve) Easiest way to do that is to remove it from the circuit temporarily. Just pull it off thermostat terminal, pull it apart from other end, and just connect female spade from incoming power wire directly to thermostat terminal. Then see if water heater ignites. If it does, and all works well, get new thermal cut-off. That cut-off is a safety feature in case of flame up at burner, it will shut off gas supply. It is not reset-able, just works once then needs to be replaced.
If that doesn't cure it, take a 12v test light, or a multimeter, and test for power at gas valve, when water heater is trying to ignite, or at ECO terminal where red wire runs from left ECO terminal to gas valve. If power is getting to gas valve, and you don't hear or feel it click, make sure ground connection is sufficient as well. If you have 10.5-13.5 volts to gas valve, and it's not opening and ground is good, then it's faulty and should be replaced. If it is clicking, (opening) but no gas coming through, you may have a plugged orifice on gas valve, provided you have cleaned burner tube of any spider webs or debris previously. If no voltage from red wire, start back tracking with meter or test light to other terminal on ECO, then to terminals on thermostat as well. You'll see how feed wire (short jumper) goes from thermostat, over to ECO. Remember, you will have to hold test light or meter probe at connection and have someone turn on switch to get a reading, which will only appear when it's trying to ignite. Let me know what you find.

Red light on ignition switch not working

On gas, usually it may light momentarily when first igniting, but as long as it lights on propane, the light goes out. Only if there is a problem that cause it not to light, will it stay on.
