Michael, Can you explain how this is happen a little clearer. Is it where you engage the PTO lever and the deck simply don't engage or is Shutting down the engine? The MTDs PTO cables are bad to go bad and hang up on engagement or it can idler assembly refusing to move in certain positions due to rust and dirt.

Mine has a lever on the right side of the seat that engages and disengages the blades. So what would the problem be in this case?

probably the switch there inside the housing once engaged it should stay engaged usually all the way back is up and off down 1 notch is on and then the height can go all the way down to the ground and blades will run

Your blades engage with a cable and the cable somewhere is bunched up. You will probably need a new cable.

Where is the safety switch to engage the blade

Your lawn tractor will have a lever that raises and lowers the mower deck which houses the two cutting blades. By lowering your mower deck to the desired cutting height, the blades should automatically engage. By raising the deck back to it's highest position, the blades will automatically disengage. Should be simple enough. You can consult your mower manual. If you don't have one, you can easily find it online using the make, model and year of the lawn tractor.

Blade still running after lever is disenagaged on Sears Craftsman LT2000 2010 riding mower.

the moveable arm that the blade engage pulley is attached to has a hole for a spring as well as the deck (or at least an attached immoveable bracket). spring goes there to bring the blades to a stop when putting the lever in the off possition.

Problem still exist, engine dies when brake relesases, blade engage, unplug safety switch under the seat

Switch under seat needs to be plugged in and make sure the pto lever for the blades is depressing the safety switch. If you are sitting on seat and seat switch is plugged in properly and it cuts off when brake is released then it is seat switch. It is about a $10.00 part; no big deal to replace.

Motor stops when the pto or cutting blades are turned on or engaged.

you most likely have a bad safety switch. there is one under your seat, one on engagement lever for blades, and probably one or two more in other places.start with the one under your seat by unplugging it and then going ahead with normale start up and implement engagement. you will have found the bad switch when everything works as it should.replace switch if you feel its necessary or just leave unplugged. it will not affect performance or longevity of the tractor

5500 FS craftsman tractor electical cutout switch problem

A jumper wire (insulated) can be TEMPORARILY connected across each switch (assuming it has two wires) to short out the switch (completes the circuit), one switch at a time. Then try to start the mower, and if it starts and runs, you have just found your bad switch.
I do not advise using the mower until you get the switch replaced . . . the safety switches exist for your protection.
