I just changed mine last week. I used a wrench underneath to turn it -- it was held on by a couple of plastic anchors. As I turned, it broke one off and freed up the piece so that it could be moved and pulled thru the opening. You really can't hurt it since you are replacing it so give it a yank or two -- the new one went in just fine.

Lightly tap on the pointy end of the thermometer, and it should snap out of the bracket that holds it. Snap replacement into position...
