The Huskvarna YTH150 uses Hydrogear transmission 319-0650, drive model 150071. One place to find parts and diagrams for most Huskvarnas is here: http://www.m-and-d.com/Hydro-Gear_parts.html

MTDs use Hydrogear trannys also. Go to the site and enter 618-0319 in the search box. It will bring up a selection of MTD transmissions.

Sears Craftsmen mowers also have trannys from Hydro-Gear.

The best lawn tractor Hydrostatic Transmission Fluid isactually 10W-50 synthetic motor oil (like Mobil 1). Do not use hydraulic fluid or transmission fluid.

Hydro static transmissions on most lawn tractors are very similar. Most of them are made by one or two manufacturers. Tuff Torq makes a lot of them, but not the Huskvarnas. They do make all the John Deere lawn tractor hydro drives. The lawn tractor manufacturers (like JD) often say they are sealed and not serviceable. That is flat out, an untruth. All of the JD hydros, and most all others, are serviceable. A complete line of rebuild/replacement parts can be found at Tuff Torq. Info and instructions can be found there. They have a lot of good general info for anyone rebuilding their tranny.

Additionally, I have found that the mower manufacturers fill them (or spec them) with motor oil, 10W-30W. In the service manual, and at the hydro manufacturer, you are told if your tractor is used in extreme or heavy duty situations it's best to drain the oil and replace it with 10W-50 synthetic motor oil (like Mobil 1™). Truth is the tranny should have this oil from the get go. It will give you more power and extend the life of the tranny. The mower manufacturers are all just being cheap. They figure why not, you're the one who has to pay for the early failure. Oh yeah, one other minor detail, the tranny manufacturer also recommends regular oil changes, like every 100 hours.

Virtually all of these trannys have a black drain plug on the top, if they do not have the add on reservoir. You have to remove the tranny from the mower (not a difficult things to do, it takes about 30 min). Pull that black plug (I used a 1" putty knife to pry mine out) and turn the tranny upside down for about 30 min to completely drain. Most hold about 2 quarts. Flip it back, right side up, and refill. Install plug and reinstall tranny. Note: under the plug there is often a magnet which collects metal shavings. Lift this magnet out while you have the plug out; clean it and replace it. It may fall out while the tranny is upside down.If anything else falls out, you have a broken tranny and will have to take it apart.

When you refill the fluid just keep filling till it comes up within a quarter inch of the plug. You may have to go through a bleed process after reinstalling the tranny. The tuff torq site explains the bleed process.

  1. Drive the vehicle to bring the transmission up to operating temperature.
  2. With the engine stopped, remove the oil level gauge front the side case of the transaxle.
  3. Check the color and smell of the oil. If it is black in color or smells burnt, further transmission service is needed.
  4. Wipe off oil level gauge with clean cloth.
  5. Fit the oil level gauge to the transaxle side case so that the threads rest on top of the case.
  6. Remove the gauge and check oil level. The level should be between FULL and LOW level line.
  7. If the level is below LOW mark, add oil until the proper level is reached.
With Oil Level/Filler Plug
  1. Drive the vehicle to bring the transmission up to operating temperature.
  2. Raise and support the vehicle safely.
  3. Remove the transaxle oil level/filler plug.
  4. Check the color and smell of the oil. If it is black in color or smells burnt, further transmission service is needed.
  5. Transaxle oil level should be even with the bottom of the plug hole. If oil level is low, adjust oil level accordingly.
  6. Install transaxle oil level/filler plug and tighten to 40 ft. lbs. (54 Nm).
  7. Lower the vehicle.

My murray 17 hp 42 inch cut hydrostat mower will barely go uphill


Hydrostat transaxles are very picky like the trans in your car. It must have clean fluid and be full of fluid. I am not saying to fill that transaxle to the top but make sure it is to the top of the fill line. Also it needs to be changed every few years and keep it clean to help it stay cool. If it has a filter make sure to change it when you change the fluid in the transaxle. That fluid is nothing more than 20-50W motor oil.

It takes 15w-50 or 20w-50 synthetic motor oil.Do not use hydrostatic fluid, it is too thin. Amsoil, Mobil-1, Purple Power or Lucas are four of the most popular brands. You have to suction it out from the plug on top of the transaxle and refill it there also to within 1.5 inch from the top,do not overfill,air is needed in top for expansion.

I had a similar thing go wrong. Even though the hydrostatic drives are designed so that the fluid doesn't need to be changed, If it is a hydrostatic transaxle check to see if it is leaking,if it is then there really is no repair to transaxle. If it isn't leaking then It sounds like the oil in transaxle is worn.The transaxle is supposed to be a sealed unit requiring no service but over time the oil will get dirty enough to cause problems like you are describing.Remove the back hitch plate and look at the transaxle it will have a rubber vent hose or a 1/4 Allen wrench fitting on top. You will need to purchase suction bulb and use it to remove as much oil from transaxle as possible. Warm the transaxle up first by running it around,then suction the oil out.Refill with a good synthetic motor oil 15w-50 or 20w-50 like Amsoil or Mobil 1.Do not use transmission fluid or hydraulic fluid. When adding the new oil back fill it to within 1.5 in from the top,be sure to allow this amount of air space in top of transaxle for expansion

You will need to purchase a battery suction bulb from sears automotive and use it to remove as much oil from transaxle as possible. Change hydrostatic transmission oil


we have tractors and, yes any of those drain bolts will work (for best results do both) then after its drained, put the drain bolts back in and top up the level
