Probably the gasoline gummed up at bottom and needs to be cleaned. if the gas is not emptied when stored it can do this and will not start

Clean the air filter (foam type) in warm soap water then apply some oil soaked in, it will smoke afterwards for a short time. Or possible minor adjustment too the mixture screw on the side of the carburetor spring loaded. Allan

I have a Poulan 625 push mower. What type of oil should I use in it? I can't find my manual.

If it has a 4 stroke engine, as most lawnmowers do, then you just car engine oil. Very occasionally you come across 2 stroke mowers.

The way to know if it's a 4 stroke or 2 stroke engine is, if it has an oil tank it's a 4 stroke engine. If there's only the one tank, i.e. you mix the oil with the petrol then it's a 2 stroke engine.

If it's a 2 stroke engine you mix petrol and 2 stroke oil at a ratio of 40:1

I am unable to start my powerbase lawnmower. I have not used it since last summer. There is sufficient petrol and oil. What could be the problem? I have also stupidly lost the instruction manual.

Have your carb looked at. If you ran it dry before you stored it last Fall then it may be worse. The small inlets and jets can become clogged with varnished gasoline. A carb rebuild kit is usually cheap and can be done by the moderate home mechanic. If this is the problem, in the future use Stabil gas treatment.

Have argos xtreme lawnmower 123cc petrol 3.5hp last used oct 2010 and stored in brick shed for winter. Will not restart april 2011. It has petrol and petrol switch is on. The choke is out for cold start...

Stale fuel is normally the cause for bad starting after the winter, fuel has a very short shelf life before it goes stale, drain the fuel tank and carb float bowl, refill with freash fuel and try again

Oil change

When storing for winter oil should be changed before so as to remove contaminates (certainly would not hurt to change-falls under the category of severe usage), then you don't have to worry in spring when you pull your bike out. Hope you drained the carbs and kept the battery charged or you could be looking at spending more money.
