Hard drives are just storage space --like a blank cd
you can get hard drives now up to 2 tb's but that only means that more data can be stored ( the more space the more cost-- 500 gigs is average))
If you want extra memory ( operating space for the computer to move data around as it is working especially if playing games)) then you need extra RAM sticks in the computer Talk with you computer shop when buying the hard drive and see if you can get extra RAM sticks at the same time. Not cheap --around $50 dollars a stick

Hard disk failure imm

Hello

The hard drive is a mechanical device that WILL fail - it is only a matter of time. Since you are being prompted that yours is about to fail, you need to get a backup of your data as soon as possible.

Use a USB memory stick, USB hard drive, CD or DVD disk or network drive to copy your data from the hard drive immediately. Once your data is copied to a safe location, you can run CHKDSK /r /f from the CMD line to check the hard drive and possibly fix issues.

If the hard drive has "Bad Sectors", you will need to replace the hard drive.

Error code 2000-0146 do i need new hard drive if so what is the replacement hard drive for a dell inspiron 1525 notebook pc thx

that error actually refers to a hard drive issue/failure. You may attempt a reformat and reinstall, but if it fails, you can proceed to get a new hard disk. You can get in touch with Dell for warranty replacement if applicable, or order a new hard drive. You may then decide either to get the same capacity or upgrade to a higher capacity drive.

My computer is telling me that during the hard drive integrity check it indicated a failure

Your hard drive is about to fail. I would backup your important documents as soon as possible, and consider installing a replacement hard drive, or upgrade to a newer PC.

This could very well be an issue with your hardware. Most of the time when you get an OS corruption message it is either a virus or hardware failure.

From the hardware failure camp I would look into these items in this order:

1. Hard Drive:
Your files are all stored on your drive and if they can no longer be successfully read from or written to the device this will cause the problem. The Hard Drive is one of the few things in a PC with moving parts and makes it a prime part to fail.

You can go to your hard drive manufacture's website and download the files to make a boot able CD or usb drive that will boot up before windows and allow you to test your drive. If the drive fails the testsyou will need to replace it and reinstall vista.

2. Memory:

Bad memory can cause a huge amount of hard to explain issues with any computer. It is not as common as the hard drive failing, but it does happen.

Go to http://www.memtest.org/#downiso and download the iso image to create a bootable diagnostics disc like you did with the hard drive. This test will take several hours to run, but will give you the piece of mind that only knowing your memory condition can give you :)
If your memory fails the test this is the best case situation and you can simply remove the bad stick of memory if you have more than one stick installed or simply replace it with the same part.

Hard drive failure

You can replace the hard drive, but you will need to reload the Operating System from some other source, as it sounds like your Hard Drive is dead.

as the hard drive have movable parts it will fail one day.
If you defragement your hard drive monthly then it will take good care of your hard drive.
As the inspector is saying you should be ready for failure of your hard drive and you should back up your data.

Need to increase hard drive and memory

Easier said than done...

If you have the specifications of your current memory, you should be able to find higher capacity compatible RAM at any computer or office supply store. If you can find the right kind, then you simply need to buy it and put it in. Older and more rare types you may need to order via internet.

Upgrading the hard drive can be a tough process. Some drives used to come with upgrading software right on the drive (like Maxtor for example) but they don't seem to do that any more. So, besides buying the right type (either PATA or SATA connector) drive, and the size you want, you have to check your system specs to see how large a drive you can put in, older systems are limited. In addition, you would need to buy hard drive duplicating software, like Powerquest Drive Image.

To see the process of upgrading a drive, I found a page for you, as the details are quite extensive...
