50 horse 4 stwont go into reverse gear due to shaft problems

the drive shaft just drives a pinion gear in the prop box that drives to gears that spin in opposite directions all the time
by selecting forward with the selector rod , a dog gear is moved forward to mesh with one gear that is turning or moves the other way to engage the other gear that is turning
that is the forward or reverse action for the prop
if you have forward but no reverse the it is not a drive shaft problem but a selector rod adjustment that is not moving the dog far enough to engage the running gear

Why would my 8 horse 4stroke honda outboard motor run fine in neutral but will not move in forward or reverse?

If it stalls out when putting it forward or reverse, then the problem could be a jammed gear train. If it still runs when shifted into gear but doesn't spin the prop, then the prop shear pin may have broken. This is done to prevent engine damage if the prop hits something hard such as an underwater log or such.

Suzuki outboard 8hp 1994, at higher speeds under loading prop appeared to cavitae, liek spun prop. repalced with new prop. On the bench, plugs removed, in forward gear hand turn prop thur haft turn and...

You may not be deep enough in the water and it really is cavitation.

May want to check the lower oil for metal as a Mostly worn out gear can do that

It's normal for a gearbox in forward to "click" in one direction and be firm against the motor when turning against the gears normal rotation.

Mercury outboard 70 hp 1987 when in forward gear the prop turns one way when in neutrel spins both ways when in reverse the prop is locked both ways is my lower unit working property

mercury and others have a "sawtooth" cut for forward gear so the prop will rachet spin backward when dry tested, and a square clutch dog for reverse, which when it finally engages locks the prop in reverse. and will not spin in either direction.

So when you shift--- snap in in gear-- do not ease it in gear, as it will wear the dog out faster.

Gear alignment on outboard motor

When the gear box ix in forward, it should make a ratcheting noise when rotated forward and should not turn at all when turning in reverse (or be resistant as your back spinning the water pump -don't do that) Once in gear (forward ) you should be able to mate the shift to the motor. I have removed the prop and nut and used a remote start to spin every thing together, but requires a lot of safety precautions.

If you are working on an older mercury, that shift rod can work both ways with disastrous results if you over spin the shifter to the back side of the detent.

My boat goes in backwards when i put it in gear and when i put it in reverse it goes forward. what could be the problem?

My guess is you have the wrong prop on your boat. You need to check if it is a right or left prop. Right hand prop will spin clockwise if you are looking at it from the rear.

I need to find out how to adjust my shifting linkage for a 1988 mercury mariner 60 hp. i don't have a diagram

Its not too bad to adjust, just takes patience and an assistant would be nice. You want to center the linkage in neutral so the throttle does not move immediately when you shift.

This can be adjusted with the motor off. You need to try it first by putting the Handshift in neutral and spinning the prop by hand. The prop should spin without locking into gear or making a "ticking noise" with the gears partially meshing. If there is a "ticking noise" you need to disconnect the shift cable; adjust it until the noise is gone. Then reattach it.

Now have your assistant move the Hand Throttle slightly forward, the gears should make a "ticking sound" before the throttle cable moves, and the gears should lock into forward before the throttle cable moves. If the Throttle cable moves too soon, you want to disconnect the Throttle cable and turn the knurled fitting to return the Throttle cable to a closed position. Easy does it with these adjustments.

If you go too far while adjusting the Forward gear it can show up on Reverse. But remember, you do not need much Throttle in the Reverse gear. Reverse is only for manuvering at slow speeds. You want low RPM for Trolling in Forward so you want a little slack in the Throttle in Forward gear.

Help. recently cavitated my 140 hp 1989 mercury outboard motor at high speed.I Removed the lower unit several times but only goes in forward about 5mph. Please help Tx jack

Not really sure what is wrong.Do all the gears work?Does the motor rev properly.Did you change the height of the motor. If the motor etc. are all ok and the motor cavitated at high speed, you may have spun the bush in the propeller hub.The symtoms are, everything works ok but the boat can rev but will have very little forward propulsion. If this is it,the prop needs to come off and taken to be rebushed. The bush stops major damage to the g/box if the prop strikes something.Hope this helps
