I have an old Ammco 7000 Lathe that still cuts nicely and holds great runout, but the cross feed stops intermittently and has to be manually restarted to complete some cuts. I notice the hand wheel pauses briefly at the bottom of each rotation while it is power feeding, and usually picks back up and keeps going, but sometimes it gets stuck. It always gets stuck at the same place (about the 6 o clock position) and when that happens the cross feed no longer advances. If I push the shut off knob in and then pull it back out, the cross feed continues. Sometimes I have to do this a few times, and make sure to pull out smartly on the knob. Any tips on what part I might be looking at replacing? I am going to tear the machine down and see if there is anything obviously damaged but have never worked on one of these before. Thanks!

The cross feed drive shaft is connected to the cross feed spindle via a coupling that resembles a universal joint that is threaded onto the end of the cross feed spindle. Either one of the roll pin holes in the drive shaft coupling has worn and the roll pin fell out or it has broken, or the coupling could have came un-screwed from the cross feed spindle. Remove the 4 bolts that hold the cross feed gearbox on and slowly pull it away from the machine and you should see the coupling I'm describing. My guess is that the roll pin broke or fell out due to wear. You can buy a new drive shaft and coupling or drill and install the next larger roll pin. Either way you should download a parts list for your machine. Just search for it, they can be downloaded free.
