PST Not a Valid Personal Folders File

A client had a Server 2000 Terminal server go down 2 of 3 drives failed RAID 5. They did have one recent full and incremental Veritas backup. I have successfully restored all of the user data plus system state using NT backup and restore to a new Server 2000 VM VMware. I decided to restore to a VM instead of a physical machine for obvious reasons. EVERYTHING works great, even their old software that was developed for them in the early eighties, except one very important .pst file. It was created in either office 97 or 2000 originally. I have tried scanpst, pst-repair-t, Stellar Phoenix, Kernel PST, OnTrack Data Recovery and probably a few others. They all either say it's not a valid file or go through the motions of repairing the file but the end result is absolutely nothing being recovered. No messages, no files, no folders, no contacts. The pst file in question is 1.6GB. So, the size shouldn't be an issue for 2000. I'm not so sure about 97 though. Thanks for any help.

Scanpst and manual guides can't assist you...
Then you may refer to Recovery Toolbox for Outlook which restores .pst files more than 2GB in size from all versions of MS Outlook https://outlook.recoverytoolbox.com/

Please check that page, they give some directions.

Inbox Repair Tool scanpst exe MSOutlook info
They speak about a Tool called DataNumen. I don't really know if it helps, but it try it. It's already destroyed.
A possible solution can be to check it on a new system, e.g. Win7.
Possibly the Scanpst has more functions then that one on WIn 2000.

I would highly recommend using Exchange Server Recovery Toolbox for Exchange Server. I just did a test trial and it is great software. Completely isolated from Exchange and you can restore to PST or back into your Exchange environment. Compatible with all versions of Exchange.

FAIL-SAFE FILE SERVER AND COMPUTER SYSTEMS

If your data is very important, you should consider doing regular data backups because hard disk will fail at some at some stage in the future. This is especially true when you get an error message"hard drive is about to fail".

Depending upon how critical your computer or files server to you or your business, you should consider building a fail-safe computer or file server system using RAID technology. RAID means "A Redundant Array of Inexpensive Disks" and there are several levels of RAID.

For details of different RAID levels - click on this link -

The most common of the fault redundant RAID systems are -

RAID 0 + RAID 1 provides fastest data transfer Mirrored hard drives.

RAID 5 is one of the most popular system, it data striping across hard drives with error correction. It has excellent performance with fail-safe system and allows for hot swappable hard drives.

There should be redundant powers supply inside the computer or file server in the event of a power supply failing.
Another consideration is to install a UPS (uninterruptible power supply) to prevent a computer or server shut down from power outages, as this will corrupt your data.

These systems do not mean you should not back up your data on a regular basis.

What I do transfer of email files?

When Outlook saves items to your computer, it uses a type of data file called an Outlook Personal Folders file (.pst) (Personal Folders file (.pst): Data file that stores your messages and other items on your computer. You can assign a .pst file to be the default delivery location for e-mail messages. You can use a .pst to organize and back up items for safekeeping.). If you are using a Microsoft Exchange Server account, your items are usually delivered to and saved on the mail server. To allow you to work with your messages even when you cannot connect to the mail server, Outlook offers Offline Folders, which are saved in another type of data file called an Offline Folder file (.ost) (Offline Folder file: The file on your hard disk that contains offline folders. The offline folder file has an .ost extension. You can create it automatically when you set up Outlook or when you first make a folder available offline.) on your computer.

The primary distinctions between the two types of Outlook data files are:

The Outlook .ost files are used only when you have an Exchange Server account and choose to work offline or use Cached Exchange Mode.
The Outlook .pst files are used for POP3 (POP3: A common protocol that is used to retrieve e-mail messages from an Internet e-mail server.), IMAP (IMAP (Internet Message Access Protocol): Unlike Internet e-mail protocols such as POP3, IMAP creates folders on a server to store/organize messages for retrieval by other computers. You can read message headers only and select which messages to download.), and HTTP accounts. When you want to create archives or back up your Outlook folders and items on your computer, including Exchange Server accounts, you must create and use additional .pst files.

How to restore emails from the .edb file?

Verify that database does not state in a dirty shutdown. Clean shutdown state is a prerequisite for Restore-Mailbox.

Did you try running the "eseutil /p" on the databases?

Also try database portability, it works if your Exchange server is from the same org. A lot of articles about this.

If all this methods give you no result, then maybe it is time to give a chance any effective special tool to help you in case..? You can try this: Recovery Toolbox for Exchange Server.

It can naturally fix your problem.

Hello,

With a RAID 5 setup, if you replace the drive with the exact model, you only need to shut down the server, replace the drive, power on, and the RAID will remount the new drive to the needed confiuration.

Good Luck.
