Take the plastic piece off the end,get some 3 in 1 oil and put some on the top of the shaft, manually try to pull up on the gear,if it doesnt move, then it is rusted on,if it loosens up keep doing that till it moves freely, then try to start it,if it still doesnt work, your starter is bad

Part number of electric start gear on 247-88190 starter motor

Look for comments about Pinion Drive. If your starter gear sounds like it bangs into the Flywheel and then immediately just spins.
I t might be a $14 part ( 590644). Is it a Tecumseh Engine?

2002 Kia Rio, sometimes it starts up fine. More and more often it sounds like the starter motor is spinning, but its not engaging. So it's not even attempting to turn over the engine. It's not a clicking,...

very good post, few like it.
this is the starter free spinning
the solenoids job is the engage the teeth the fly wheel (ring gear)

the pinon shaft in starter is dirty, clean it (easy fix)
bad starter solenoid. get a new starter , most solenoids cost more.
your suspisons are dead on.

Husqvarna 125r wont start. has spark, compression, air filter and exhust checked. could it be the timing? if so how do you adjust?

Pull spark plug out. Pull cover from recoil starter. Pull recoil starter. Inspect flywheel mag's for cleanliness. Then turn engine over untill piston is topped out. Your manets and pick up should be lined up to eachother at this point. If they are not, pull nut and or bolts from flywheel and remove to check for damaged key-way or woodruff key that aligns flywheel to crank. That is the only timing.

I have what I think is a tecumseh 9 h.p.gas engine with electric 110volt starter, how do I identify this motor, the only numbers I see on the motor are on the crank case#19-0-201 on the electric starter#2244...

To identify the engine, look on the blower housing (the half round - half rectangular piece covering the flywheel), the numbers should be stamped into the metal somewhere.
As for the magnets inside the flywheel, if you are talking about the ones that go against the inner circumference, you cannot replace them. They have to be in an EXACT location to retain the balance of the flywheel and if they are for the magneto they have to be located so that they trigger your spark at the exact right timing of the engine. Best solution is to purchase a new flywheel.

Ring gear on flywheel

Hello
The most part of the Tecumseh engines are prepared from factory to install electric start .
Just remove the cover on the side of the motor and if you have the ring gear allready installed on the flywheel you just simply have to install the electric start . Make sure the gears on the electric start will match the ring gear .
Hope this help

THE FLY WHEEL WONT TURN WHEN I TRY TO START THE BIKE IS THE STRARTER CLUTCH BEHIND THE FLY WHEEL WORN. IS IT A BIG JOB TO REMOVE THE FLY WHEEL

If you hand-turn the flywheel, and it fails to turn, it might be that your engine is 'frozen". Remove the starter-motor and use a sizable flat-end screw-driver to try to turn the flywheel, just to be sure! The starter-motor is behind the flywheel, and if it is worn, you should get at least a 'crink' sound to indicate that the starter-motor pulls out and spins a bit. Yes, it is a big job removing the flywheel. You must have oil in the engine at all times!

Have a Mitsubishi starter for a small 3 cylinder (Toro Mower)

Removed starter and tested with new battery and jumper cables...starter worked fine. Replaced battery and cleaned cable attachments...unit started as usual.

When starter throws this would indicate that the interconnect circuits are intact..the engine still would not turn...that leaves the battery, the cable, or a siezed engine. The engine flywheel turned easily...no siezure. That left only the battery and cable. Battery was 3 years old...cable was corroded...bad combination. Battery was replace and corrosion removed from the cable terminals...started first crank.

I have a yard machine snowblower that will not start

If the engine is infact seized, then it will have to be re-built or replaced. It was probably run with very low or no oil at all. You may be able to get a short block for your engine. All you would need to do is reuse your cylinder head, flywheel, carburetor, ignition modual, recoil houseing, fuel tank, governor linkages and controlls. The engine block and all internal parts would be replaced. It is far cheaper to just replace the engine rather than re-build it unless you are able to do it yourself and save the labour cost.
