The NOT SERVICEABLE UN-TRUTH.

The Huskvarna YTH150 uses Hydrogear transmission 319-0650, drive model 150071. One place to find parts and diagrams for most Huskvarnas is here: http://www.m-and-d.com/Hydro-Gear_parts.html

MTDs use Hydrogear trannys also. Go to the site and enter 618-0319 in the search box. It will bring up a selection of MTD transmissions.

Sears Craftsmen mowers also have trannys from Hydro-Gear.

The best lawn tractor Hydrostatic Transmission Fluid isactually 10W-50 synthetic motor oil (like Mobil 1). Do not use hydraulic fluid or transmission fluid.

Hydro static transmissions on most lawn tractors are very similar. Most of them are made by one or two manufacturers. Tuff Torq makes a lot of them, but not the Huskvarnas. They do make all the John Deere lawn tractor hydro drives. The lawn tractor manufacturers (like JD) often say they are sealed and not serviceable. That is flat out, an untruth. All of the JD hydros, and most all others, are serviceable. A complete line of rebuild/replacement parts can be found at Tuff Torq. Info and instructions can be found there. They have a lot of good general info for anyone rebuilding their tranny.

Additionally, I have found that the mower manufacturers fill them (or spec them) with motor oil, 10W-30W. In the service manual, and at the hydro manufacturer, you are told if your tractor is used in extreme or heavy duty situations it's best to drain the oil and replace it with 10W-50 synthetic motor oil (like Mobil 1™). Truth is the tranny should have this oil from the get go. It will give you more power and extend the life of the tranny. The mower manufacturers are all just being cheap. They figure why not, you're the one who has to pay for the early failure. Oh yeah, one other minor detail, the tranny manufacturer also recommends regular oil changes, like every 100 hours.

Virtually all of these trannys have a black drain plug on the top, if they do not have the add on reservoir. You have to remove the tranny from the mower (not a difficult things to do, it takes about 30 min). Pull that black plug (I used a 1" putty knife to pry mine out) and turn the tranny upside down for about 30 min to completely drain. Most hold about 2 quarts. Flip it back, right side up, and refill. Install plug and reinstall tranny. Note: under the plug there is often a magnet which collects metal shavings. Lift this magnet out while you have the plug out; clean it and replace it. It may fall out while the tranny is upside down.If anything else falls out, you have a broken tranny and will have to take it apart.

When you refill the fluid just keep filling till it comes up within a quarter inch of the plug. You may have to go through a bleed process after reinstalling the tranny. The tuff torq site explains the bleed process.

Important: Routine inspection of the transaxle fluid is not required. Transaxle fluid inspection is only required if there is a symptom indicating a concern with the fluid.
  1. Park the vehicle on a flat level surface.
  2. Operate the vehicle in order for the transmission fluid temperature to reach the normal operating range. Specification
    Transaxle normal temperature: 60-70 degrees C (140-158 degrees F)
  3. With the engine at idle, manual shift through all transaxle ranges and return to the PARK position. Leave the engine idling.
  4. Clean any dirt or debris away from the area of the transaxle fluid level indicator.
  5. Remove the transaxle fluid level indicator bolt (1) from the transaxle.
  6. Remove the transaxle fluid level indicator (2).
  7. Wipe away any transaxle fluid from the indicator.
  8. Insert the indicator into the transaxle until fully seated.
  9. Remove the indicator and inspect the level and the condition of the oil on the indicator:
    • Transmission fluid level at normal operating temperature (1)
    • Transmission fluid level if cold (2)
  10. If the fluid level is incorrect inspect for the following conditions:
    • Fluid below level, inspect for a leak.
    • Fluid above level, inspect for contamination of the fluid.
Important: The tranaxle uses T-IV fluid, GM P/N 88900925 (Canadian P/N 22689186). The fluid is normally red in color. The oil may darken in color with more miles on a vehicle.

    BULLETIN COVERS:
    Transaxle fluid level checking and condition information. This updates all information previously published for 1990-93 HYDRA-MATIC 3T40, 4T60, 4T60-E and 4T80-E transaxles.
    Due to enhancement of assembly plant fluid fill capabilities, it is especially important to warm the transaxle up to operating temperature before determining that fluid needs to be added. If the transaxle fluid is close to operating temperature, the fluid level may read slightly below the "ADD" mark. DO NOT ADD FLUID UNLESS THE TRANSAXLE IS AT OPERATING TEMPERATURE AND THE DIPSTICK SHOWS FLUID LEVEL IS BELOW THE CROSSHATCHED AREA.
    TRANSAXLE FLUID LEVEL INFORMATION:
    Checking fluid level and condition (color and smell) at recommended service intervals will provide early diagnosis information about the transaxle. This information may then be used to correct a condition that, if not detected early, could result in major transaxle repairs.
    When adding or changing fluid, use only DEXRON(R)-IIE. Refer to Maintenance and Lubrication (Service Manual Section 0B) for maintenance information and service intervals.
    NOTICE: Do not overfill. Overfilling will cause foaming, loss of fluid, shift complaints and possible damage to the transaxle.Fluid level should only be checked when it reaches a normal operating temperature of 82-93 degrees C (180-200 degrees F).     TRANSAXLE FLUID COLOR:
    Fluid color will be red when new.
    IMPORTANT: When new, automatic transaxle fluid is red in color. The red dye is added so the assembly plant can identify it as transaxle fluid and distinguish # from engine oil or antifreeze. The red dye is not an indicator of fluid quality and is not permanent. As the vehicle is driven the fluid will begin to look darker in color. The color may eventually appear light brown. A dark brown color with a burnt odor may indicate fluid deterioration and signal a need for a transaxle fluid change.TRANSAXLE FLUID CHECKING PROCEDURE:
    1. Start engine and drive vehicle until the transaxle reaches operating temperature of 82-93 degrees C (180-200 degrees F). This temperature is reached after about 24 km (15 miles) of driving.Inaccurate fluid level readings will result if the fluid level is checked immediately after the vehicle has been operated under certain conditions:
    - When outside temperatures are above 32 degrees C (90 degrees F) - At sustained high speeds - In heavy city traffic during hot weather - Towing a trailer - In commercial service such as taxi or police use If the vehicle has been operated under any of these conditions, shut the engine off and allow the vehicle to cool for thirty (30) minutes. Then restart the vehicle and continue with step two. 2. Stop vehicle on level ground and put the gear selector in "P" (Park). 3. Set parking brake. 4. With your foot on the brake pedal, move the shift lever through each gear range, pausing for about three seconds in each range. Then put the gear selector back in "P" (Park). 5. If the fluid level is where it should be, push the dipstick back in all the way. ADDING TRANSAXLE FLUID:
    If fluid level is low (after properly performing the checking procedure above) add only enough fluid to bring the level into the crosshatched area. It doesn't take much fluid, generally less than a pint. Don't overfill. Remember that the level does not need to be at the top of the crosshatched area to be correct.
    After adding fluid, always recheck the fluid level as described in the above procedure.

The fluid level screw is intended to be used for diagnosing a transaxle fluid leak or resetting the transaxle fluid level after service that involves a loss of fluid.
  1. The fluid level should be checked when the transaxle is near room temperature or at 104°F (40°C). To acquire this, left the car idle for 3-5 minutes with all of the accessories off.   2. Apply the brake, then move the gear shift selector through all gear ranges, pausing three seconds in each range. Shift the lever into P.
  3. Raise and safely support the vehicle.
  4. Place a suitable drain pan under the check plug to catch any fluid that may drip out.
  5. Remove the oil check plug. The oil level should be at the bottom of the oil check hole. Because the transaxle operates correctly over a range of fluid levels, fluid may or may not drain out of the screw hole when the screw is removed.
  6. If fluid drains through the screw hole, the transaxle may have been overfilled. When fluid stops draining, then fluid level is correct and the check plug may be installed. If fluid does not drain through the screw hole, the transaxle fluid may have been low. Add fluid at the vent cap location in 1 pint increments until the oil level is at the bottom of the oil check hole.
  7. Install the oil check plug/fluid level screw and tighten to 10 ft. lbs. (14 Nm).
  8. Carefully lower the vehicle.

Need easy way to take off transmission fluid cap.Trying to check fluid.

Checking the fluid level on these cars isn't easy. Not one of the Generals best ideas. There isn't a dipstick under that cap. The fluid level is checked by removing a screw on the side of the transmission while the car is running and sitting level.
This makes it tricky to do for the average do-it-yourselfer as you not only need to jack up the front of the car but the back end to keep it level. Probably a vain attempt to get the cars back into the dealers shop.

Anyway, here is the book procedure.

Changing the transmission fluid


Once you've drained the transaxle by removing drain plug, re-install drain plug and torque to mfg. specs. To fill transaxle, you need a 5/8" square drive attached to a 9" extension, breaker bar or ratchet. Raise vehicle on hoist, or jack up and secure with jackstands. The fill plug is located above and slightly to the right of the location where the passenger side c.v. halfshaft enters the transaxle. Remove fill plug. Using a fluid exchange tool available at your local parts store, fill with automatic transmission/transaxle fluid available only from a Suzuki dealership, (part# ESSO LT 71141) until fluid starts to run out of fill hole, then replace fill plug, and torque to manufacturer specifications. I'm a former Suzuki technician. I hope this was helpful.

How to check transaxle fluid level and what fluid to use?


04 prius uses "World Spec" trans fluid; special for the Prius, regular ATF is not compatible. There is no dipstick. There is no need to change it. The only time that the level would need to be adjusted is if one had a leak.
