The freezer we purchased has a large opening where the compressor sits. Since it will be in our heated garage, is there a covering for the opening.

Any device that transfers heat has to have air circulation around it. So Gina, if you block that opening, the compressor will overheat and destroy itself in no time. First it will cycle on its internal winding thermostat for days or weeks, but eventually the excess heat will thin the lubricating oil so badly and the rotating parts internally will swell with the heat to the point that it will lock itself up.

So the advice is to leave it open to BREATHE !!!!

It is probably open to dissipate the heat, so it does so with air near the floor.

the heated garage will be no hotter than the kitchen in summer time heatwave and the fridge motor still works fine . don't worry about it as covering it up will create more problems that what it is worth

How can you keep a idylis chest freezer in garage during winter? temp below freezing

20 years ago guys used to put a 50 watt bulb down in the compressor area BUT the freezers today have been designed with the condenser in the freezer wall and don't retain any heat in the cold weather. Generally what you will experience is the temperature in the surrounding area drops to 10 degrees the freezer goes off and when the area begins to warm up the compressor tries to start with syrup for oil in its crankcase and cycles on its protector until it gets hot enough to warm the oil and allow it to run. Compressor life is shortened and the freezer temp is unstable. A self regulating crankcase heater could be purchased at a local supply house and wrapped around the compressor but I don't know if its ever been tried on a compressor that small or if you might overheat the compressor. ............Can you say garage heater? Its a matter of system design. All of the components for a commercial conversion are out there but a system that small is never considered. Sorry wish I could help more. Hope this helps and good luck.

Freezer in unheated/unairconditioned garage it stays cold in winter time but it is not freezing when the temperature is hot in the garage

The first thing is to find out if there is a fan that runs next to the compressor. If not then in the summer the machine is overheating and passing the heat up to the machine itself thawing or preventing the freezer from operation properly

It won't start no click sound if I turn the temperature control to maximum

If your hearing a clicking sound and it won't start your looking at either the relay switch for your compressor or the compressor itself. I recommand replacing the relay switch first to see if that solves your problem. Just look for the model number of your freezer, visit your local part store (reliable, amre) and ask them for the relay switch for the compressor. It should be under 20 bucks or so.

To install the part you first need to located the compressor. There should be an opening to the freezer somewhere in the bottom. Once you find the opening (after removing the cover) you should see a large cylinder metal container, this is your compressor. If the freezer unplugged located a small box attached to the compressor that looks similar to the relay you purchased from the part store. Remove the wiring for the old relay and then proceed to remove the relay (it should just be plugged in). Once it is removed place in the new relay. Plug back the fridge and see if your freezer works. If the problem persists it will be your compressor. You should have a professional have this replaced as it requires weilding and removal of the freon gas. The repair for a compressor job is $500 up.

I hope this helps and good luck. Please give positive feedback if this helps :)

My refrigerator's inner fan was making weird noises. After some time I poked it and then it stopped moving. The fan is now unable to turn. What should I do?

Two things could be wrong. Motor bad or frozen up with ice.The noise could have been
from frost building up and hitting the fan.If this is the case you need to defrost. Even self
defrost models do this some times..Empty freezer and run a hair blower (dryer) to put heat
in the compartment. this could take a while to do. over night...So run blower for a while to heat up the freezer then shut it off, close door .let sit It takes time for the heat to get to the ice.

if the motor is bad you will have to take inside cover off the access the motor

Our freezer is about a year old. We went out today and found that it was not running. There was a large heavy box sitting on top of it, would that do anything? Or what should we do to get it to work...

First you have to check the relays in compressor. maybe its defective or check up the power supply or AC current or the wiring near the compressor if not defective compressor

Gibson Upright Freezer

Is it a self defrosting? Or not? And how did you defrost it?If you scraped and chipped the ice away, you may have poked a hole in the evaporator and the refrigerant (freon) leaked out.

Kenmore chest freezer does not stay below 30 degrees compressor runs but I don't see a fan to cool the compressor

If your chest freezer is less than 50 years old, it does not have a fan. Cooling coils contact inner walls of freezer compartment, warm coils dissipate heat through outside walls of freezer. If compressor runs, temp is 30+ degrees, gasket is OK, lid not left open, then you have one of two contions: 1. Low capacity compressor 2. Refrigerant leak. Solution to either is to replace freezer. (My opinion: Don't get a Kenmore brand, which generally ties you into poor warranty and slow and poor service.) No matter what brand name is on the freezer, it is most likely manufactured by Electrolux (in St. Cloud, MN) or Haier (from China). Look at the model / serial number plate before purchase to see where it was manufactured. Yes, the USA manufactured ones are better. (and I'm not just saying that because the plant is less than 15 miles from where I am sitting right now)

Need a freezer for garage in the Dakotas

Refrigeration units don't care for the most part how cold it gets with exceptions. The oil is not a concern, neither is manual or auto defrost. Refrigeration units that are required to operate in cold temperatures, say below 30 degrees F. have crankcase heaters on them to heat the oil which keeps freon moving out of the oil and the bottom of the compressor. Otherwise when the compressor starts the cold freon will we sucked out of the bottom of the compress with a large quantity of oil which can destroy the compressor. Another item used for cold weather application is a fan control sensor which keeps the condensing temperature up or the unit will again remove the oil from the crankcase. It may work fine for a quite a while, but it will fail in continuously cold temperatures.
