The windings on the motor rotor or stator have melted to the point where excessive current is entering the motor and causing it to overheat and melt further - results in smoke, possible fire, blown fuses.

Probably got water in the motor and it has shorted out. It it doesn't work now It may be time for a new motor or a new unit.
